Passage Two

Living and dealing with kids can be a tough job these days, but living and dealing with parents can be even tougher.

If I have learned anything in my 16 years, it is that communication is very important, both when you disagree and when you get along. With any relationship, you need to let other person know how you are feeling. If you are not able to communicate, you drift apart. When you are mad at your parents, or anyone else, not talking to them doesn’t solve anything.

Communication begins with the concerns of another. It means that you can’t just come home from school, go up to your room and ignore everyone. Even if you just say“Hi”, and see how their day was for five minutes, it is better than nothing.

If you looked up the word“communication”in a dictionary, it would say“the exchange of ideas, the conveyance(表達(dá))of information, correspondence(通信), means of communication: a letter or a message”. To maintain a good relationship, you must keep communication strong. Let people know how you feel, even if it’s just by writing a note.

When dealing with parents, you always have to make them feel good about how they are doing as a parent. If you are trying to make them see something as you see it, tell them that you’ll listen to what they have to say, but ask them politely to listen to you. Yelling or walking away only makes the situation worse.

This is an example: one night, Sophie went to a street party with her friends. She knew she had to be home by midnight after the fireworks, but she didn’t feel she could just ask to go home. That would be rude. After all, they had been nice enough to take her along with them. Needless to say, she was late getting home. Her parents were mad at first, not when Sophie explained why she was late, they weren’t as mad and let the incident go. Communication is the key factor here. If Sophie’s parents had not been willing to listen, Sophie would have been in a lot of trouble.

Communication isn’t a one-way deal: it goes both ways. Just remember: if you get into a situation like Sophie’s, telling the other person how you feel-listening is the key factor to communication.

39. In the writer’s view, dealing with parents is than with children.

A. more difficult

B. easier

C. more uninteresting

D. more interesting

40. The main idea of the second paragraph is.

A. the importance of friendship

B. to make your feeling known to others

C. the importance of communication

D. the disagreement between generations

41. When parents and children are in communication, the key to a happy relationship is that.

A. children should always obey their parents

B. they should be equal

C. parents play the leading part

D. both make the opposite know their feelings

42. The example in this passage proves that.

A. Sophie’s parents are willing to listen to her

B. Sophie is very polite to her parents

C. Sophie did well in explaining her being late

D. communication is the solution to misunderstanding

43. All the following statements are correct except“”.

A. If you don’t agree with others, you’d better let them know

B. It is better to say“Hi”to others than say nothing

C. If you are not able to communicate, walk away

D. Communication is a two-way deal

Passage Three

There are certain things in life we take for granted. We don’t question them. I may not have always enjoyed“good hair days”but I always had a full head of hair. It was my hair on which I spent much time, attention and money.

I am slightly embarrassed to admit that, when I was diagnosed with cancer at 61, the first question I asked my attending physician was“Will the chemotherapy make me lose my hair?”His reply was“Yes.”And he wasn’t lying. After several rounds of chemotherapy, one night, I ran my fingers through my hair out of habit. It came out in my hand. I did it again. And again. I repeated until my scalp(頭皮)could be seen. The next morning I asked a nurse if she could shave off the remaining hair.

After that, I didn’t look at myself in the mirror, nor did I cry, but I felt desperate. I didn’t show any to my husband, nor my family. I kept my head covered at all times. I hated the way I looked, my eyelashes went, then my eyebrows. I felt like an unfinished painting.

When my hair began to grow back, about eight weeks after I finished chemotherapy, it was soft like a newborn’s and spaced out. The longer it grew, the curlier it became. I was so grateful that I began to like it. It’s not my old hair, but then I am not the old me.

Being without a vital part of my body for one long year taught me an important lesson: never rely on your looks. But we all do, to a certain extent. I know I did. The currency I subconsciously invested in my well-being had a lot to do with outward appearances. Yet, I got used to the way I looked soon, because you can’t complain of bad hair days when you have no hair. Ultimately, being alive is all that matters.

C. There is no disease that cannot be overcome.

D. One cannot be judged by their appearances.

Passage Four

According to Runner’s World, you can burn more calories running in the heat. You normally burn a mix of fat and carbs(碳水化合物)when you exercise, but the more intense the exercise is, the more that mix shifts towards carbs and away from fat. For example, running a nine-minute mile in the heat burns a higher percentage of carbs and lower percentage of lat than running at the same pace in gaoler conditions.

If you do decide to go on a run in the heat, you’ll need to fill up on carbs. Runner’s World advises eating more carbs than you would if you were running in cooler conditions. It also recommends planning your training runs based on intensity rather than pace, so you should slow down, while it’s hot. If you are trying to lose weight, your focus should be exercising at a low intensity to stay in the fat- burning zone.

Normally your skin, blood vessels and perspiration(排汗)levels adjust to the heat, but these systems may fail when you are exposed to high temperature and humidity for too long. If you sweat heavily, and don’t drink enough fluids, you will become dehydrated. Heat exhaustion is caused when the temperature reaches 40 degrees and you experience symptoms such as sweating and clammy skin, headaches, nausea, and weakness. Heatstroke can develop from this if you don’t manage to cool down. This life-threatening condition can cause confusion, fainting, visual problems fatigue and heart rhythm problems among other things. Heatstroke can cause brain damage, organ failure or even death.

Both the exercise itself and the air temperature and humidity can raise your body’s core temperature, The National Health Service advises against exercising in the hottest parts of the day(11 am to 3 pm). The Mayo Clinic suggests watching for warning signs and symptoms of heat-relatedillnessesifyoudoexerciseduringhotweather.

Passage Five

Conservation scientist Kim Williams-Guillen was wracking her brain to come up with a way to save endangered sea turtles from egg poachers(偷獵者): If she placed a fake egg containing a GPS tracker in the sea turtles’nests, she might be able to track the thieves.

Williams-Guillen found a flexible plastic material to mimic(仿造)the shell of real eggs. She and colleagues then used a 3D printer to produce the fakes. Finally, they put the smallest GPS tracking devices inside each. Then comes a fake about the same size, weight, and texture of a green sea turtle egg. The researchers then went to four Costa Rican beaches, where green sea turtles come ashore to make their nests. As mothers laid their eggs, the researchers slipped a single spy egg into each nest. Once the fakes are covered in sand and mucus from the real eggs, it’s very difficult to tell the difference between the two.

Of the 101 fake eggs, 25 were taken by thieves. The farthest moving egg traveled 137 Kilometers inland. The fake egg sent its final signal the next day from a residential property, suggesting that the research team had tracked the eggs through“all of the players in the entire chain”.

By understanding that chain, Williams-Guillen says researchers can identify trading hot spots. She emphasizes that the tracker is not a way to catch local thieves, many of them living in poverty, but a tool to better understand their routes. Learning local trading hot spots could help them—and eventually law enforcement—identify larger players in the chain.

In the meantime, Williams-Guillen and her colleagues are working to get their eggs to other sea turtle conservation organizations. Ultimately, though, scientists and nonprofits need to engage communities with local outreach and education programs to save sea turtles.“The real meat and potatoes of conservation isn’t going to come from fake eggs,”she says.

52. What did the researchers do with the fake eggs?

A.They sent them to the producer of tracking devices.

B. They placed GPS tracking devices inside them.

C. They studied the behavior of green sea turtles.

D. They developed a new type of plastic material.

B. To better understand sea turtles’activities.

C. To gain some data for research on turtle eggs.

D. To find the trading routes and big players involved.

54. What does the last sentence of the text probably mean?
