There was great excitement at Thorby police station. The inspector had received a phone call from an informer(通報者). The man said that a gang(幫、伙) intended to rob the main post office. He even told the inspector the date and time for which the robbery was planned. The Thorby police were not used to serious crimes(罪). Except for occasional cases of apple stealing, their peace was seldom disturbed(打擾). Hardly did anything more serious happen.
The robbery was going to take place at two oclock on market day. The informer said that one of the gang would have a revolver. This worried the inspector most of all. On market days, the street near the post office was always crowded. There was danger that someone might be killed. It was the most difficult case the inspector had ever had.
The inspector wanted to make sure the gang was caught and he made preparation carefully. He ordered his men to wear ordinary clothes so that some of them could mix with the people in the post office. Others were to be in the street outside to prevent the gang from escaping. On the day that the robbery was to take place, all was ready. At two oclock, a large black car was parked in front of the post office. Three men, with handkerchiefs over their faces, jumped out and ran into the post office. Two of them stayed by the door. The third went up to the counter and pulled out a revolver. No sooner had he done this than the inspector blew his whistle. The man standing at the counter immediately put the revolver back in his pocket and pulled the handkerchief from his face, “Could I have a five-penny stamp, please?” he said. “You will have to tell a better story than that to the judge,” the inspector said. “And anyway, there is no parking in front of the post office.”

British Gas is at your service all winter. The weather forecast says that cold weather is coming. There are many problems connected with space travel. The first and greatest of them is gravity. If you let your pencil drop to the floor, you can see gravity in action. Everything is down to the earth by magnetic force(磁力). The weight of something is another way of describing the amount of force exerted(施加壓力) on it by gravity. A rocket must go at least 2,500 miles an hour to take anyone beyond the gravity of the earth into space.
Another problem is the strain that a person is subjected to(使受到)when a rocket leaves the ground. Anything that is not moving tends(趨向)to resist movement. As the rocket leaves the ground, it pushes upward violently(猛地), and the person in the nose cone(火箭頭部) is pushed back against the chair. During this thrust, gravity exerts a force on the body equal to nine times its normal force.
Once out of the earths gravity an astronaut is affected by still another problem—weightlessness. Here, if a pencil drops, it doesnt fall. If a glass of water is turned upside down, the water will not fall out. All of us who are used to gravity expect things to have weightless conditions. Recent long flights have shown that the body needs special exercise in a spaceship.
14. As a rocket leaves the ground, an astronaut experiences a force
called ____.
A. gravity B. downward force
C. strain D. a push
15. The force of gravity an astronaut is subjected to when the rocket
leaves the ground is equal to ____.
A. 5 times its normal stress B. 3 times its upward force
C. 7 times its downward force D. 9 times its normal force
16. In space things do not fall because of ____.
A. the force of the wind B. weightlessness
C. the force of the push D. the upward force of air
17. The best title of the passage would be ____.
A. Gravity Is The Enemy Of Space Travel
B. Space Travel Problems
C. People Cannot Leave The Earth Because Of The Air
D. Weightlessness, Gravity And Strain Are All Too Difficult To
Overcome

What does the typical(典型的) American or Canadian usually eat? Most people think that the typical North American diet(飲食) consists of(由……構(gòu)成) fast foods—hamburgers and French fries. It also includes convenience (n.方便) foods, usually frozen of canned, “junk food” without much food value—candy, potato chips—and so on. This diet is very high in sugar, salt, fat, and cholesterol(膽固醇), and the choice of food does not provide much good nutrition(營養(yǎng)).
However, eating habits are changing. North Americans are becoming more interested in good health, and nutrition is an important part of health. People are eating less red meat and fewer eggs, and they are eating more chicken and fish. They know that chicken and fish are better for their health than meat or eggs because these foods do not contain much fat or cholesterol. Some foods might cause health problems, and people want to stay away from them.
For health reason, many people are also buying more fresh vegetables. They may eat them without cooking them first, or they might cook them quickly in very little water because they want to keep the vitamins(維生素).
The “typical” North American diet now includes food from many different countries. More ethnic(不同民族的) restaurants are opening in big cities in the United States and Canada. Foods from Japan, Thailand, Mexico, West Africa, China, and India are very popular. At lunch time, many people go to ethnic fast-food places for a quick bite.
How are we going to eat in the future? We will probably continue to eat more fish and vegetables and less meat. We will still buy convenience foods, but frozen foods will be better for our health, and canned foods will have less salt and sugar. Our “junk food” in the future is not really going to be “junk” at all, because instead of candy bars we are going to eat“nutrition bars” with a lot of vitamins and protein(蛋白質(zhì)). In the future, our diet will probably be even more interesting and healthful than it is now.
18. According to the passage, which of the following is NOT considered
typical American food? ____.
A. Junk food B. Convenience food
C. Nutritions food D. Fast food
19. Which of the following is NOT mentioned in this passage? ____.
A. North Americans want to live a long life
B. The typical North American diet doesnt have enough nutritions
C. The future diet of North America will be more healthful
D. Fish and vegetables are better for health than meat and eggs
20. The author thinks that the changing diet in North America is ____.
A. interesting B. wonderful C. unreasonalble D. rapid
