Spider-Man is one of the iconic comic-book heroes. A web-slinging smartass with a troubled personal life and a tough job, he's always had great appeal for young men - and some women.Crucial to his story, though, has always been the spunky Mary Jane, his girlfriend (and later wife) in his regular comic-book series, played with great appeal by Kirsten Dunst in the films. This comic book series from Marvel, based on Japanese romance comics for teens, takes both characters back to their teenage years.

Aimed mostly at teenage girls, it focuses on Mary Jane, a red-headed cheerleader known as MJ to her friends. One of the most popular girls in her high school, she nonetheless harbours inner insecurities and fears, like all teenagers. Her best friend is the bossy Liz Allen, whose boyfriend, Flash, bullies another friend of hers, the nerdy Peter Parker. MJ's life becomes complicated after being rescued by the superhero Spider-Man one day after a supervillain attacks the subway. She keeps running into Spider-Man, being one of those unfortunate girls who's always around when the forces of evil attack, and develops a definite crush on him.

Unfortunately, she also starts to have feelings for her friend Peter Parker, and can't bring herself to decide between the two. What she doesn't know is that Peter Parker is Spider-Man! Of course, things become even more tangled when a new girl, Glen Stacy, moves to school, and sets her own eyes on Peter. To all this romantic drama are added a whole array of supporting characters, as well as frequent villainous schemes, monster attacks, and other whacky antics.

This is a charming series, drawn with beautiful, manga-influenced art and cleverly and wittily written. It feels like a superior TV series, like Gilmore Girls or Buffy in comic-book form.Strongly recommended for teenagers of both sexes, as well as anyone who likes a good, light read.
