A

The British Medical Association (BMA) research paints an alarming picture of teenage health in the UK. Nearly one in five 15-year-olds are overweight or obese. Psychological problems such as depression and anorexia now afflict one fifth of adolescents, says the report.

These problems are being fuelled by an increasingly impoverished diet, insufficient exercise, excessive alcohol and drug consumption, and tobacco smoking. According to the BMA, less than 15 percent of girls aged 13 to 15 eat the recommended amount of fruit and vegetables. Almost a quarter of 15 and 16-year-olds smoked cigarettes in the past week. And a fifth took an illegal drug in the last month.

Sexual health in adolescents is also deteriorating. As many as one in ten young women aged 16-19 may be infected with Chlamydia, which can lead to infertility and ectopic pregnancy. The rate of teenage pregnancy is also high - at around 3 per cent.

“It seems that adolescents are the only group whose health is getting worse,” says a consultant in adolescent medicine at a hospital in London. “Better drugs are protecting older people from disease and vaccinations have brought huge improvements for infants. But for people in their teens there are social health problems which mean worrying rates of accidents, suicide, drug use, pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease.”

The rapid rise in obesity is being blamed by some experts on the fast-food industry and a society focused increasingly around car use. Meanwhile, the BMA is calling for a comprehensive plan to tackle the root causes of deteriorating teenage health. It suggests a ban on alcohol advertising and an increase in the price of cigarettes to reduce their affordability to teenagers. Mental health can be improved by teaching teenagers basic social skills and through anti-bullying policies in schools. Sexual health can be improved by enhancing sex education and through easier access to contraception and confidential advice.

An expert from BMA says: “Services targeting the needs of adolescents are almost nonexistent. We must invest properly in sexual health and provide service that young people feel comfortable using if we are to reduce the burgeoning levels of sexually transmitted diseases.”

One fine afternoon I was walking along Fifth Avenue, when I remembered that it was necessary to buy a pair of socks. I turned into the first sock shop that caught my eye, and a boy clerk who could not have been more than seventeen years old came forward. “What can I do for you, sir?”“I wish to buy a pair of socks.” His eyes glowed. There was a note of passion in his voice. “Did you know that you had come into the finest place in the world to buy socks?” I had not been aware of that, as my entrance had been accidental. “Come with me,” said the boy, ecstatically. I followed him to the rear of the shop, and he began to haul down from the shelves box after box, displaying their contents for my delectation. There was on his face an expression of solemn and holy rapture, as if he were revealing to me the mysteries of his religion. I looked at him in amazement. “My friend,” said I, “If you can keep this up, if this is not merely the enthusiasm that comes from novelty, from having a new job, if you can keep up this zeal and excitement day after day, in ten years you will own every sock in the United States.”

My amazement at his pride and joy in salesmanship will be easily understood by all who read this article. In many shops the customer has to wait for someone to wait upon him. He displays no interest either in you or in the goods he is paid to sell. Yet possibly that very clerk who is now so apathetic began his career with hope and enthusiasm. The daily grind was too much for him; the novelty wore off; his only pleasure were found outside of working hours. He became a mechanical, not inspired, salesman. After being mechanical, he became incompetent; then he saw younger clerks who had more zest in their work, promoted over him. He became sour. That was the last stage. His usefulness was over.

I have observed this melancholy decline in the lives of so many men in so many occupations that I have come to the conclusion that the surest road to failure is to do things mechanically. There are many teachers in schools and colleges who seem duller than the dullest of their pupils; they go through the motions of teaching, but they are as impersonal as a telephone.

46. Why did the writer go to the sock shop?

A. Because the boy clerk was polite.

B. Because it was the best sock shop in the world.

C. Because he happened to realize the necessity for a pair of socks.

D. Because he was walking along Fifth Avenue.

A. was serving him mechanically

B. was enthusiastic about his job

C. was good at serving his customers

D. did well in showing off his ability of selling socks

A. The sock clerk will one day own a sock shop in the United States.

B. The sock clerk can always have pleasure in his shop.

C. Many teachers in schools and colleges are duller than the sock clerk.

D. The shop clerk might make his customers wait to be served one day.

49. Which of the following statements is True?

A. A clerk usually begins his career with hope and enthusiasm.

B. When the work becomes too hard for a clerk, he will lose interest in it.

C. It is working mechanically that leads a clerk to have no interest in his job.

D. Young clerks are more active in their work than the old ones.

50. Which is the best title of the passage?

A. A pair of sock

B. An enthusiastic clerk

C. The road to failure

D. The sock clerk

C

After our early morning wake-up, we are still a couple of hours away from the overlook. It is pitch black. I can feel the heavy humid fog left behind by last nights rain. This is why the tour memo listed “flashlight.” Unfortunately, the majority of our hiking party of nine must have missed the memo, as we have only four flashlights between us.

An hour later, we are on the trail. It is dark, foggy, wet and the rocks are slippery. We alternate places between the flashlights “haves” and “have-nots.” As we march, the only voices heard are from the “haves”: “Step up, step down, watch out for the rock on your left.”

We reach Intipunku with only 15 minutes to spare. The view at sunrise is not what we were told in the travel brochures. Three feet in front of our faces is a white substance called “fog.”

As we walk toward the Machu Picchu ruins, my anticipation is mounting. When will the fog lift? Slowly, as if someone is cranking up a curtain, Huayna Picchu begins to appear, overlooking Machu Picchu. First there are fleeting glimpses, and then finally, there it is, in its full splendor.

When I envisioned going to Machu Picchu, I always thought of mysterious ruins and the famous postcard picture looking toward Huayna Picchu. But there is more to this man-made /natural wonder of the world. It is the adventure of getting there. I knew I wanted to experience the feel of the Inca culture and the energy of this “sacred valley.” I also knew I didnt want to take the train, but needed to hike. Depending on your starting point, the Inca Trail is 25 to 33 miles of semi-arid desert, breathless mountain passes and stunning tropical cloud forest. Our hike took us four nights and 25 miles to finish.

Our local guide Mauro keeps telling us “no worries, the hike is 90 percent mental and only 10 percent physical.” I am not convinced that the physical percentage is correct, but I definitely become more and more excited as we get closer to Machu Picchu. By getting myself into good shape, running 20 miles and hiking a 500-foot hill five to seven times per week before I left for Peru, I was able to enjoy the beauty of the hike and not worry as much about aching muscles and lungs.

51. About the flashlight, which of the following is True?

A. The local guide had asked them to take flashlights for the hike.

B. They had taken enough flashlights for the hike.

C. Before they got to Intipunku, they depended a lot on their flashlights.

D. They used flashlights all the time.

52. Put the following events into the right order.

a. They reached Intipunku ahead of time.

b. They read the travel brochures.

c. They got to Huayna Picchu.

d. They are getting closer to Mache Picchu.

e. They enjoyed the splendor of Machu Picchu.

A. abcde B. bacde

C. abced D. baced

53. What does the underlined word “anticipation” in Paragraph Six mean?

A. expectation B. excitement

C. disappointment D. enthusiasm

54. What can we infer from the text?

A. The writer made good preparation for the tour.

B. The Inca Trail took them four nights and 25 miles.

C. The writer became excited because he was well prepared for the tour.

D. Some members of the tour forget to take flashlights.

55. According to the writer, what attracted him most in the tour?

A. Mysterious ruins.

B. the famous post-card picture.

C. the hiking.

D. the Inca culture.

第二節(jié) 讀寫任務

To be a volunteer

Last September, the NBA star Christ Paul volunteered to help people in North Carolina not only by donating some computers and a large amount of food but also playing games and communicating with people in need of help face to face.

Paul reminds me of one of my classmates who once worked as a volunteer in the 2009 Beijing Olympic Games. As many visitors from home and abroad got to Beijing to eyewitness the grand event, he kept busy telling them the way to the spot, helping them know more about Beijing, the country and the Olympic Games. Standing for so long talking and giving directions, his arms and face turned tanned those days, but he felt happy when people said “Thank you” and praised his pretty smiles. It was because of the work of tens of thousands that the game became so successful.

Examples presenting the importance of voluntary work are countless. As is known, it helps people in their daily life as well as in great events and even in disasters. It helps deal with quite a lot of social problems and thus promotes the development of the society. It is also good to the development of the volunteers themselves, because by helping others, they are rewarded with smiles and thankfulness, which can bring them the sense of being unselfish and responsible. In fact, being a volunteer is not only helping others, but also helping the volunteers themselves.

Paul has set us a good example. For yourself and for others, please join in the voluntary work and help those in need of help heart and soul.
