Stephanie Hill-Lopez & Duncan Kennedy
As the school year winds down and students and staff part ways for summer, they will also be saying goodbye to a very familiar face that has been around almost five decades. Gary Brown has been teaching chemistry for 47 years at Skyline High School in Idaho Falls, and he is set to retire this school year. Stephanie, seems like Mr. Brown has a lot of history with that school.
Stephanie Hill-Lopez (Reporter): He definitely does, and Skyline High School, as we know it today, was actually built in the late 60s. But before the school even had a building, they were housed with Idaho Falls High School, and thats where Mr. Brown began his teaching career.
Ask any student and theyll probably tell you they dread the first day of a new school year. Gary Brown has experienced a first day of school more than 40 times.
Gary: You realize what things work and what things dont work, and you try to remember the things that worked the best and revise the things that didnt seem to work.
Stephanie: Year after year Mr. Brown taught chemistry to hundreds of students.
Gary: The quality of the student has been very, very good, so thats one of the things that kept me from burning out.
Stephanie: Browns been teaching at Skyline ever since the first day it was built. Brown says hell miss everyone at school. His advice for graduating seniors and those entering education is to have hope and work hard.
Gary: Just keep working as hard as you can, because you cant get ahead if youre standing still.
Stephanie: Now the science wing of the school is set to be remodeled the next summer, and some school administrators I spoke with today said that they are thinking about naming the wing after Mr. Brown, or putting some sort of plaque in there just for all of his dedication over the past 47 years.
Students: …Morning, Father Schneider.
Schneider: Good morning to all of you kids.
Nine AM at the St. Alois School in North Sydney, the start of another working day for 99-year-old Father Geoffrey Schneider.
Father Schneider came here in 1965 and never left, one teacher whos certainly made the grade when it comes to longevity.
Schneider: …an honour, really, and, if I can keep going. Many others would do the same as they had the health and energy.
Thousands of peoples have sat through his religious education classes over half a century, chalk replaced by computers for the man they long ago nicknamed “Father 1)Schnitzel.”
Girl: He never raises his voice or anything when, when we dont listen to him, and hes very nice. Boy A: A hundred is pretty amazing!
Boy B: Yeah, he must have liked his job. Boy A: Thats for sure.
Now the Guinness Book of Records has officially recognized his remarkable achievement. School Official: Father Schneider, you are officially the oldest active teacher in the world.
Father Schneider turns a hundred in December, a real-life *Mr. Chips who has no intention of saying goodbye.
Schneider: Hope that I can teach again next year, but we…we wont say any more than that.
