AIDS is now generally believed to be caused by HIV which was originally spread to humans from chimps(黑猩猩)from West Africa.

The first known cases of AIDS occurred in the United States in the early 1980s, among a number of homosexual(同性戀的)men in New York and California. At that time, the illness was seen to be connected with cancer and seemed unable to be treated. Before long, it became clear that these men were suffering from this rare illness.

Is there anything duller than being stuck in a long line of traffic when you still have miles to go? Wouldn’t it be great if you could relax and let somebody else do the driving? Well, if all goes well with a European research project, that possibility might just become a reality. The Safe Road Trains for the Environment Project will look at linking a series of cars in a road train, controlled by a lead car.

So how does it work? The lead car will be driven by an experienced driver who knows the route well. The lead driver will have full control over the cars within the road train. Cars will be fitted with a navigation(導(dǎo)航)system; therefore, as a driver approaches the road train, he can signal to the lead car that he wishes to join in. Once accepted, he will push his car’s way into the road train behind the last car. To leave the convoy (車隊(duì)), a driver simply signals to the lead driver, takes back control of the car and goes to one side. The cars within the convoy fill its position and continue traveling.

A road train like this allows drivers to relax, read the paper or work on a notebook computer. There will be fuel savings. The cars in the train are close together so the air drag (空氣阻力)is lower than normal. And it should help to ease traffic jams.

The project began in September 2011 and was expected to run for three years. Actually, this type of driving doesn’t require any high technology. Instead, the researchers work on taking advantage of the technology already in existence. Also, testing should be carried out to examine its safety. The first test cars equipped with this technology can be on test tracks as early as 2013.

Social rules or laws on marriage vary widely between countries. Some countries still do not have a legal minimum(最小的)age for marriage, which makes child marriages very common there.

In the Western Christian countries, a 13-year-old is still considered a child. Even getting married in one’s late teens is not usually encouraged because married life is likely to interfere with(妨礙)a young woman’s education and consequently limit opportunities in later life. And there might be also physical dangers in giving birth so young.

In Muslim countries such as Saudi Arabia, Iran and Pakistan, the age of teenagers at around 13 or 14 is the legal age for marriage, but in Turkey it is 15, and in Egypt and Tunisia, 18 the same minimum age as in many Western countries.

In many countries, the trends of urbanization and education for girls have seen a drop in the number of child brides. However, early marriages continue to occur in poor rural areas. In India, for example, the legal age of marriage for a girl is 18 and to a boy, 21. Yet, according to government statistics, 18 percent of ten- to fourteen-year-old girls in the poor, rural state of Rajasthan in the northwest of the country are married. It is clear, then, that child marriages are connected with poverty, lack of education, rural customs as well as religion. So there are hardly child marriages in urban or rich areas.

Too often young people get themselves employed quite by accident, not knowing what lies in the way of opportunity for happiness and security. As a result, they are employed doing jobs that afford them little or no satisfaction. Our school leavers face so much competition that they seldom care what they do as long as they can earn a living. Itake the position that parents do not owe their children a college education. If they can afford it, they can certainly send them to the best universities. But they must not feel guilty if they can’t. If the children really want to go, they’ll find a way. There are plenty of loans(貸款)and scholarships for the bright and eager ones who can’t afford to pay.
