Restoration and Reestablishment of the Post-WWII Overseas Remittances Network in the Sze Yap Counties

Abstract: After World War II came to a close, with the restoration of China’s links with the outside world and with the reestablishment of overseas migration network, the Sze Yap region entered into a restoration and reconstruction period.With the Guangdong military and administrative authorities’ support and cooperation, the official remittances network system featuring modern banking and postal systems was quickly restored and reestablished and became the major channel for overseas remittances to flow into Sze Yap.With the influx of huge overseas remittances, the economy of the Sze Yap qiaoxiang region was becoming increasingly vibrant.Part of the remittances was transformed into financial capital giving a strong impetus to the recovery and development of private financial and remittance transferring systems in the Sze Yap region.

Abstract: Lady Xu of the She ethnicity risked her life to resist the Yuan regime and has been admired generation after generation by local people.Temples in her honor were built by the local Han people to recognize her loyalty and bravery and the worship has become a folk belief.Deep historical origin and ideological source can be traced for such supra-ethnicity belief from five aspects: historical background of resisting the Yuan, traditional values, folk beliefs, religious beliefs in gods and ghosts, and the exchanges between and integration of She and Han nationalities.

Abstract: Chen Baisha was a famous thinker in moral education in the Ming dynasty.He put forward the "honesty as the starting point” view of moral education and took honesty and integrity as the basis of moral education, and ambition and time cherishing as moral education content.He emphasized correctly handling the relationship between righteousness and profit, reason and desire, morality and material in moral education, and all the time put morality in the first place in the moral education.The view of "honesty as the starting point" embodies the essence of Chinese traditional moral education thought and is still of realistic significance to the moral education today.

Abstract: Chen Baisha’s inheritance and development of Cheng Yi and Cheng Hao’s Confucian thought is embodied in three aspects: First, attention to balanced representation of mental and moral understanding; second, emphasis on the objectivity and subjective initiative of mental understanding to highlight moral freedom; third, inheritance of the simplicity of Confucianism and the development of character cultivation.Chen’s Confucianism thought derived from the Chengs and developed into a self-sufficient system and occupied an important position in Confucian orthodoxy.

Abstract: Zhan Ruoshui, a great master of the Neo-Confucian study of mind, left nearly two dozens of works including Gu Yi-jing Zhuan (A Record of the Ancient Book of Changes), Shi-jing Li Zheng (Corrections of the Book of Songs) and Sheng Xue Ge Wu Tong (Confucian Saints’ Study of Things).They cover annotation of classics, political ideology, philosophical discussions, family ethics and so on, in the form of poetry, discussions and quotations.There are now about a dozen collections of his works including Collected Works of Zhan Ruoshui, Complete Works of Zhan Ruoshui, and Collected Poems of Zhang Ruoshui.His works are truly voluminous, but they need further investigation and organization.

Abstract: An investigation of the distribution of the personal archives on Liang Qichao in Jiangmen region reveals that Liang’s archives are rare in number, uneven in distribution, poor in quality, defected in categories and structure, and inadequate in reflecting the various stages of Liang’s life.Effective measures should be taken to strengthen the collection and protection of Liang archives to contribute to the research on Liang and the cultural building of Jiangmen.

Abstract: The cultural origin of the stories of communication between humans and gods recorded in Tai-ping Kuang-chi can be traced to human sacrifice in the ancient agricultural age.It was the result of secularization of sacrificial ceremony of burning the sorcerer and drowning people to please gods.Due to Yin and Yang pairing in sorcery, people believed that human sacrifice rituals are to send marriage partners to gods so as to please them and pray to them for protection and therefore ensure good weather for farming and a bumper grain harvest.Later such god-pleasing concept was shed and evolved to secularized stories of encounters between humans and gods.

Abstract: In the Huangyou reign period during the Northern Song Dynasty, Nong Zhigao launched a rebellion against the Song Dynasty in the Zuo and You Rivers basin and bore down on Guangzhou in the course of half a month.This mighty "rebellion" was finally cracked down, but it exposed the weakness of the empire in the Lingnan region.It also inspired intelligentsia’s reflection on and attention to the military affairs in the Lingnan region and their attempts to remold the image of the literati through singing praise of loyal and brave people in the form of poems.

Abstract: The Strategies of the Warring States’ understanding of human nature is concrete and not abstract.It only makes revelations on related issues and does not make label-style interpretations; it only makes judgments on facts and does not make value judgments.It believes that humans are benefit-oriented and seeking advantages and avoiding disadvantages is a natural inclination just like the market being full in the morning and empty in the evening or moths flying and worms wriggling.One cannot judge a person by standards of goodness or wickedness.Therefore it is neutral on human nature.Its related ideas include: emphasis on “usefulness” and not on why; not judging “usefulness” on basis of ethical standards; the purpose of “usefulness” being selfish and not being enriching the nation or bringing peace and tranquility to people.

Abstract: This study adopts a mathematical research method and examines the relationship between college students’ English performance, achievement goal orientation and English language anxiety by analyzing data collected from 383 college students in Guangzhou.Results show that: (1) college students who mainly adopt the mastery-approach and mastery-avoidance goal orientation have a high level of English language anxiety; (2)English performance of female students who adopt the performance-avoidance goal orientation is better than that of male students of the same orientation, and there is no significant difference between male and female students in English language anxiety and English performance; (3) the mastery-approach goal orientation is positively related to English performance, and negatively related to English language anxiety; the mastery-avoidance goal orientation is not related to English performance but is positively related to English language anxiety; the performance-approach goal orientation is not related to English performance but is negatively related to English language anxiety; performance-avoidance goal orientation is negatively related to English performance but positively related to English language anxiety.The findings have some bearing on the English teaching practice in colleges and universities.
