Two men, both seriously ill, stayed in the same hospital room. One man was allowed to sit up in his bed for an hour each afternoon. His bed was next to the rooms only window. The other man had to spend all his time flat in his back.
Every afternoon when the man in the bed by the window could sit up, he would pass the time by describing to his roommate all the things he could see outside the window.
According to his words, the window overlooked a park with a lovely lake. Ducks and swans played on the water. Young lovers walked arm in arm among flowers. Grand, old trees made the scenery very beautiful, and a fine view of the city could be seen clearly.
As the man by the window described all this, the man on the other side of the room would close his eyes and imagine the nice pictures.
Days and weeks passed. One morning, the nurse arrived and found the man by the window had died peacefully in his sleep. As soon as the room seemed tidy again, the other man asked if he could be moved next to the window. The nurse agreed.
Slowly, painfully, he held himself up to take his first look at the outside world. To his surprise, he could see nothing but a blank wall. Later the nurse told him that his roommate was blind and could not even see the wall.

We can make mistakes at any age. Some mistakes we make are about money. But most mistakes are about people: “Did Jerry really care when I broke up (與……分手) with Helen?” “When I got that great job, did Jim really feel good about it, as a friend? Or did he envy (嫉妒) my luck?” When we look back, questions like these can make us feel bad. But when we look back, its too late.
Why do you go wrong about our friends or our enemies (敵人)? Sometimes what people say hides real meaning. And if we dont really listen, we miss the feeling behind the words. Suppose someone tells you, “You are a lucky dog.” Is he really on your side? If he says, “You are a lucky boy” or “You are a lucky girl”, thats being friendly. But “l(fā)ucky dog”, theres a bit of envy in the “dog”. Maybe he doesnt see it himself. But bringing in the “dog” puts you down a little. What he may be saying is that he doesnt think you should have such good luck.
“Just think of all the things you have to be thankful for” is another example that says one thing and means another. It could mean that the speaker is trying to get you to see your problems as part of your life as a whole. But is he? Hidden in the phrase is the thought that your problem cant be important. Its telling you to think of all the poor people in hunger and cold in the world when you havent got a date for Saturday night.
How can you tell the real meaning behind some-ones words? One way is to take a good look at the person talking. Do his words fit the way he looks? Does what he says square with (與……一致) the tone (腔調(diào)) of his voice?
His posture (姿勢(shì))? The look in his eye? Stop and think.
The minute you spend thinking the real meaning of what people say to you save another mistake.

( )27. Talking about “You are a lucky dog”, the writer is saying ________.

B. it means the same as “You are a lucky boy”or “You are a lucky girl”
C. the word “dog” shouldnt be used to speak about people.
D. sometimes the words used by the speaker give away (泄露) the feeling behind the words
