When Narcissus①narcissus [nɑr's?s?s] n. 水仙died the pool of his pleasure changed from a cup of sweet waters into a cup of salt tears, and the Oreads came weeping through the woodland②woodland 英 ['w?dl?nd] 美 ['w?dl?nd] n. 林地；森林adj. 林地的；居住在森林中的that they might sing to the pool and give it comfort.

And when they saw that the pool had changed from a cup of sweet waters into a cup of salt tears, they loosened③loosen 英 ['lu?s(?)n] 美 ['lusn] vt. 放松；松開vi. 放松；松開the green tresses④tress 英 [tres] 美 [tr?s] n. 一綹頭發(fā)；發(fā)辮；卷發(fā)；枝條vt. 把（頭發(fā)）梳理成綹of their hair and cried to the pool and said, 'We do not wonder that you should mourn⑤mourn 英 [m??n] 美 [m?rn] v. 哀悼；憂傷；服喪in this manner⑥manner 英 ['m?n?] 美 ['m?n?] n. 方式；習慣；種類；規(guī)矩；風俗for Narcissus, so beautiful was he."

"But was Narcissus beautiful?" said the pool.

"Who should know that better than you?" answered the Oreads. "Us did he ever pass by, but you he sought for⑦seek for 尋找；追求；探索, and would lie on your banks and look down at you, and in the mirror of your waters he would mirror⑧mirror 英 ['m?r?] 美 ['m?r?] n. 鏡子；真實的寫照；榜樣vt. 反射；反映his own beauty."

And the pool answered, "But I loved Narcissus because, as he lay on my banks and looked down at me, in the mirror of his eyes I saw ever my own beauty mirrored."

當水仙少年的芳魂溺斃在池中，原本甜美的池水失色成一潭咸澀淚液，林中仙子來到林邊哭泣，這樣他們就可以用歌聲來慰藉水仙少年隕落在湖中的靈魂。

當他們發(fā)現(xiàn)湖水由甘芳可口變得苦澀難咽如一潭淚，他們松開了束發(fā)的綠枝在湖邊泣道：“我們非常明白您靈魂深處為水仙少年的凋零而哀慟，他是那么美麗?！?/p>

“水仙少年很美嗎？”池疑惑道。

“還能有人比您更了解他的美嗎？”林中仙子回答道，“他對我們熟視無睹，而每當他行經(jīng)您的身旁，總要駐足停留，憩息在您身畔，望著您，從您的水鏡中他能夠欣賞自己的美?！?/p>

然而池答道：“我愛水仙少年是因為，當他躺在我的身畔望著我，從他明鏡般的眼眸中，可以看到我自己的美。”
