Rocky Lyons, the son of New York Jets defensive end Marty Lyons, was five years old when his mother Kelly was driving through rural Alabama. He was asleep on the front seat of their pickup truck, with his feet resting on her leg.
As his mom drove carefully down the winding two?lane country road, she turned onto a narrow bridge. As she did, the truck hit a large rough hole and slid off the road, and the right front wheel got stuck in a rut(車轍). Fearing the truck would tip over, she attempted to jerk(猛拉) it back up onto the road by pressing hard on the gas pedal(油門) and spinning the steering wheel(方向盤)to the left. But Rockys foot got caught between her leg and the steering wheel and she lost control of the truck.
The truck turned over and over down a 20?foot ravine(溝壑). When it hit bottom, Rocky woke up.“What happened, Mama?” he asked. “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”
Kelly, blinded by blood, was in a terrible condition and pinned against the crushed door.“Ill get you out, Mama,” announced Rocky, who had miraculously escaped injury. He moved out from under Kelly, slid through the open window and tried to pull his mother out. But she didnt move. “Just let me sleep!”begged Kelly, who was drifting in and out of consciousness. “No, Mama,” Rocky insisted. “You cant go to sleep!”
Rocky wriggled(蠕動(dòng)) back into the truck and managed to push Kelly out of the wreckage(殘?。? He then told her hed climb up to the road and stop a car to get help. Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Kelly refused to let him go alone. Instead they slowly crept up the embankment(路堤), with Rocky using his 40?pound frame to push his 104?pound mother. They crawled inches at a time. The pain was so great that Kelly wanted to give up, but Rocky wouldnt let her.
To urge his mother on, Rocky told her to think about that Little Train, the one in the classic childrens story. The little engine that could, which managed to get up a steep mountain. To remind her, Rocky kept repeating his version of the storys inspirational phrase: “I know you can, I know you can...”
When they finally reached the road, Rocky was able to see his mothers torn face clearly for the first time. He broke into tears. Waving his arms and pleading, “Stop! Please stop!” the boy hailed (招手叫停)a truck.“Get my mama to a hospital,” he begged the driver.
It took 8 hours to rebuild Kellys face. She looks quite different today—“I used to have a straight long nose, thin lips and high cheekbones;now Ive got a pug nose(扁鼻), flat cheeks and much bigger lips”—but she has few visible scars and has recovered from her injuries.
Rockys heroics were big news. But the brave and determined youngster insisted he didnt do anything extraordinary. “Its not like I wanted it to happen,”he explained. “ just did what anyone would have done.”his mother said,“If it werent for Rocky, Id have bled to death.”

Fearing that no one would be able to see her little boy in the dark, Kelly refused to let him go alone.

Ⅰ.Fast reading
Look at the title, can you complete it after you read the whole passage?
Ⅱ.Detailed reading
Understand the main idea by analyzing the relationship of the main characters.
1.Complete the form after reading the passage quickly. One word is required for one blank.
2.What do you think of the title now?
I believe Rocky can ______________.
本文的標(biāo)題I think I can具有較強(qiáng)的開放性。
What does “I” refer to in the passage?
What can “I” do according to the passage?
What are the characteristics of“I” according to the title?
Ⅲ.Deep reading
Get the details and have a good understanding of the plot.
1.What happened to the mother? Complete the event list.
2.What happened to the son? Rearrange the order of the story.
A.When it hit bottom, Rocky woke up.“What happened, Mama?” he asked. “Our wheels are pointing toward the sky.”
B.He was asleep on the front seat of their pickup truck.
C.He moved out from under Kelly, slid through the open window and tried to pull his mother out.
D.“Ill get you out, Mama,” announced Rocky, who had miraculously escaped injury.
E.Rocky wriggled back into the truck and managed to push Kelly out of the wreckage.
F.Rocky used his 40?pound frame to push his 104?pound mother.
G.“No, Mama,” Rocky insisted. “You cant go to sleep!”
H.The pain was so great that Kelly wanted to give up, but Rocky kept repeating his version of the storys inspirational phrase to urge his mother on.
I.With tears in his eyes, waving his arms and pleading, “Stop! Please stop!” the boy begged the driver to send his mother to the hospital.
Ⅳ.Evaluating Reading
Read the concluding paragraph and answer the question.
1.Is it a surprising ending? Why?
2.Do you think it’s a good concluding paragraph? Please offer your reason whether you have a better idea or not.
Rich and Anthony spotted something ahead at the same moment.
“Whats that up there?” asked the engineer. Anthony didnt answer. Staring attentively, he was trying to identify the curious shape on the track ahead. A box? Old rags?
Suddenly both men realized what it was. “Kids on the track!”
Anthony jumped through the cab door onto a narrow running board six feet above the wheels and raced to the front of the train. Climbing quickly down a steel ladder, he paused at the bottom.
Now he could clearly see the two little children. They were sitting alongside the rail. Anthony waved wildly and shouted, “Get away! Get away!”
Absorbed in play, Todd and Scott did not hear the train. Finally, as the sound became thunderous, Scott looked up and froze.
Though the train was slowing, Anthony knew it was still going faster than he could run. So he forced himself to wait until he would be close enough to jump off and grab the boys. With perhaps ten feet left between them and the sharp?edged snowplow blade at the front of the train, Anthony jumped forward from the ladder. Landing on the loose, fist?size stones alongside the track, he had to struggle to keep his balance. In two giant steps he almost reached the children. They stared up at him in wide?eyed shock. Anthony, throwing his body into air, flew toward them.
The unending blast(爆炸) of the train horn(喇叭) struck children’s mother Kate like a hammer blow. “The boys!” she cried, and raced out the door. They were gone!
“The track,” she thought. “I must get to the track!”
Part of the train then punched(痛擊) into the back of Anthonys work jacket, tearing the nylon fabric. Still, Anthony managed to pull Scott completely under him.
Hes dead, Anthony thought. He felt unhappiness with horror. Burying his face in the stones, he pushed downward on the two boys with all his strength as the train passed inches above them.

1.所續(xù)寫短文的詞數(shù)應(yīng)為150左右;
2.應(yīng)使用5個(gè)以上短文中標(biāo)有下劃線的關(guān)鍵詞語;
3.續(xù)寫部分分為兩段,每段的開頭語已為你寫好;

從提示句預(yù)測(cè)可能結(jié)果,運(yùn)用I think I can的分寫角色思維方法,來展開對(duì)結(jié)尾的預(yù)測(cè)。
Para.1:The first person Kate saw when she reached the halted train was Todd.
(1)What’s the function of Kate?
(2)What would happen to Todd and Scott?
(3)What would happen to Anthony?
(4)What would Anthony respond on the spot?
(5)Was it necessary for the doctor to check them and make a simple diagnosis (診斷)?
