Welcome Unit
The first day at senior high school
“Senior high school at last!”When I walked on campus this morning, I was excited but also anxious. As you know, on the first day of school, we students are often asked to introduce ourselves formally. I want to make a good impression on others, but its not that easy to organise, write and revise a self-introduction. What if the other guys find my introduction boring? I dont want this embarrassing thing to happen.
Soon it was 8 a.m., time for class. To my delight, instead of the frightening self-introduction, the teachers designed many ice-breaking games, through which I got to know my new deskmate, Jimmy. He is an exchange student. Asked his nationality, he said American. He came to our school because his parents work in a company here. I was curious and kept asking, sometimes when he was concentrating on understanding the teacher. But he wasnt annoyed, nor did he ask me to leave him alone. He seems outgoing and has a good personality. I have the confidence that we will make good partners though we come from different nations.
Unlike in junior high school, six of my new teachers are male. The English teacher, one of the three females, said that to achieve our goals we need to explore our own learning style. Reading a lot and taking notes when necessary are the best strategies to improve English. Flash cards also help.
Jimmy and I registered for a lecture on physics experiments at 5 p.m. I look forward to more such activities.

Unit 1
Teenage Life
Rosa, an adult, 20 years older than me, became my good friend on the first day we met. In front of her, I can voice my opinions freely and fluently and there seems to be no generation gap. We sometimes have heated debates on different topics from how to deal with greenhouse gases to ways to stay cool as a teenager. Rosa once told me she liked ballet dancers smooth and beautiful movements and wanted to be a ballerina. But after graduating in Chinese literature at Oxford, she became an editor, which in her parents opinion was suitable for her. But actually, deep in her heart, she prefers something different. So she quit her job, which obviously, confused them.
As a freshman in senior high school, I am addicted to adventures and always challenge myself in different extra-curricular activities. One day, my desk mate Tom recommended me to sign up for a course titled Recent Advances in Computer. And I was attracted by its content. However, while showing off what I had learned to Rosa on weekend, I broke down her computer which contains important files. With no choice, we went to an expert.
Tough having a busy schedule, the expert focused himself on finding a solution. Fortunately, with the help of the advanced technology, the confusing problem was solved. Seeing that, I knew it was time for me to shoulder the responsibility. So I volunteered to clean up and prepare a huge plate of fish for dinner. They were happy about that and I also realized youth is not just about being cool, but also about being responsible for ones own behaviors.

Unit 2
Travelling around
I am an architect. One day, I contacted a tourism company recognized by the official organization and I signed up for a package tour. The company made full arrangements for my travel. First, I was given a brochure with all types of detailed information sources. And then, I was offered accommodations in a hotel. But I was told to check in at its counter desk before moving into a flat and to check out when quitting accommodations. Other than that, I was requested to pay for a scheduled flight to Xian by credit card.
I flew to Xian Airport from which it was a real hike to my destination, the tomb of Qinshihuang. So I rented a car and transported myself along a narrow path to the tomb. Its amazing architecture like a castle came to my sight. The tomb was built for Qinshihuang, the first emperor in China, who took powerful control of his empire. There followed another amazing site, the Terracotta Army, which is unearthed from his tomb and made up of more than 8,000 unique soldiers statues made in the third century B.C. Besides, at a corner, I was amazed at some comments by travelers on the tomb management.
After admiring the impressive view, I took a flight back to our hotel. Suddenly an idea came to my mind why the ancient civilization in China was so great. The answer might have come from developed economy. It was economic development that might have created brilliant civilization. However, what about the foreign civilization? To experience the civilization abroad, now it is time to apply for a visa and pack my clothes into a package for a tour. I am extremely looking forward to travelling around the world.

Unit 4
Tom Survived the Earthquake
One night, Tom watched a TV program about natural disasters like drought, flood, volcanic eruption, typhoon and hurricane. These disasters often destroy lots of buildings and cause many deaths, which have a bad effect on people. The survivors suffer greatly when their houses are in ruin and they have to live in shelters. Luckily, in the context of such disasters, kind people will dig for trapped survivors and delivered daily supplies to them.
One day, Tom suddenly felt the ground slide. Then, some bricks and metal fell down and many things crashed. Next, there was no electricity. Without power, it was dark. He knew the earthquake happened, which affected Tom greatly. A wave of shock struck him.
But immediately, he breathed deeply and made a great effort to calm down and use his wisdom to deal with this emergency. It struck him that he should go to take the first aid kit at once, with medicine, water and some food in it. As soon as he got it and stayed in the firmest place of his house, the whole building was damaged and fell down. Many people were buried.
Fortunately, some strong pines made space for Tom. Though trapped, he didnt feel as if the world was at an end. With water and food on hand, he was sure he would survive. Ten hours later, he heard volunteers sweeping in the open air. He struck the pipes violently to make noises. At length he was rescued. He saw people wave to him. Soon after, he was sent to a shelter and provided with some daily supplies.
In summary, disasters are cruel but people are kind.

Unit 5
Chinese characters and calligraphy
Chinese characters are the only one of the oldest writing systems that is still in use. They date back to the Shang Dynasty when human beings started to carve symbols on the tortoises shells or bones. Despite the fact that China experienced ups and downs due to varieties of factors, Chinese characters have been handed down up to now, which 1.4 billion Chinese people are proud of. Interestingly, Japanese characters are closely related to Chinese characters. Or rather, Japanese characters are based on Chinese characters. As we can see, many words are the same as Chinese ones in Japanese vocabulary.
Chinese calligraphy is a specific symbol of Chinese culture. Words cant describe my love for it, though my handwriting is not so good. So I beg my teacher for advice and he encourages me to refer to some reference books about calligraphy. Besides, he asks me to take a positive attitude to Chinese calligraphy. His point of view is to use Chinese calligraphy to bridge the culture gap between China and the western countries, and try to make westerners treat cultures around the globe equally. Therefore, he demands I should keep pactising and never give up.
After that, no matter how busy I am, I have been struggling to practise it. I regard practising calligraphy as one of the affairs that I must do every day. Whether I am in the subway, in a gas station or in my apartment, I always consider how to make my calligraphy more beautiful.
Finally, hard work pays off, and many of my works have been exhibited around the world and appreciated by local people. And now I major in calligraphy in university. Ill try to create more classic works of calligraphy by systematic means.
