2020年是中國農(nóng)歷鼠年，十二生肖中，鼠為首。而鼠在國人心中常與“四害”聯(lián)系在一起，《詩經(jīng)》中就有“碩鼠碩鼠，無食我黍”等經(jīng)典詞句，反映了人們對老鼠的痛恨與無奈。但鼠的存在卻有它的道理。

“鼠”在英語中有mouse與rat之分。mouse是“田鼠、耗子”之意，其復數(shù)為mice。mouse比rat小，因其小巧靈活，常作為寵物，屬中性詞。而rat則個頭大，常傳播疾病，糟蹋糧食，毀壞財物，往往帶貶義。

老鼠為何稱“老”呢？原因大概有三：老鼠在人類出現(xiàn)之前就存在多年了;老鼠有胡須;老鼠壽命長。

在中國，傳統(tǒng)上對鼠年出生的人在占卜、配星座等方面有著有趣的說法。筆者在美國也發(fā)現(xiàn)了一段關(guān)于屬生肖的文字：You are ambitious yet honest， prone to spend freely， seldom making lasting friendships， most compatible with Dragons and Monkeys， least compatible with Horses.鼠年出生的人有抱負，誠實，好亂花錢，難交知心朋友。與龍年及猴年出生的人最相配，與馬年出生的人則最不配。筆者不大相信這些說法，一笑了之。

注意生肖中的鼠用Rat，而不是Mouse。如：

A：Under what animal sign were you born？ 你屬什么？

B：Mine is the Rat. 我屬鼠。

下面從諺語、習語及常見詞匯等幾個方面說說老鼠（mouse/rat）。

一、諺語

最常見的諺語莫過于“老鼠上街，人人喊打”，即：A rat crossing the street is chased by all .

貓兒一跑耗子鬧：When the cats away， the mice will play.

屋倒（船沉）鼠先走，樹倒猢猻散：Rats desert （or forsake， leave） a falling house（a sinking ship）.

只要功夫深，鐵杵磨成針：A mouse in time may bite in two a cable.

狡兔三窟：A mouse that has but one hole is quickly taken.

貓兒靦腆，老鼠翻天：A blate cat makes a proud mouse.

四肢不勤，一事無成：A cat in gloves catches no mice.

不管黑貓白貓，能抓住老鼠就是好貓：It doesnt matter whether the cat is black or white as long as it catches mice.

鼠目寸光：To see no further than ones nose

投鼠忌器：Dont burn your house to get rid of mouse.

鼠竄狼奔：To ran away in all directions

膽小如鼠：As timid as a hare/chicken-hearted/pigeon-hearted

二、英漢習語

1. （as） poor as a church mouse：一貧如洗

2.like a drowned mouse （rat）：像落水老鼠一樣（狼狽）

3.mouse and man：一切生物;眾生

4.play cat and mouse with sb./ play like a cat with a mouse：欲擒故縱

5.die like a rat：被毒死

6.have rats in the attic （garret）：不安;想入非非

7.like a rat in a hole：像洞中的老鼠;像甕中之鱉

8.smell a rat：覺得可疑

9.the rat race：口語，貶義，指激烈的競爭

10.（as） drunk as a mouse：大醉

11.rat on sb. （sth.）：告密

12.you rat：卑鄙小人

三、與鼠有關(guān)的常見詞匯

mouse 常指“鼠標”。mouselet指“幼鼠”，其中l(wèi)et 是詞根，表示“小”。mouse proof指“防鼠的”，其中proof是后綴，表示“防……的”。mouse potato 表示“網(wǎng)蟲”。 mouse color指“鼠灰色”。rats 是俚語，指“討厭”“糟糕”“胡說”等。rat-face 俚語，意指“陰險卑鄙的人”。

總之，鼠在人們心目中既有不光彩的一面，又有可愛的一面。漢語中一想到“老鼠嫁女”“小老鼠上燈臺”時，就會喚醒兒時的記憶，會心一笑。同時，由于老鼠的基因與人類十分類似，老鼠常常作為科學和醫(yī)藥實驗動物，用來檢驗藥品的藥效和劑量，還可用于教學及解剖等，為人類社會的發(fā)展作出了重大貢獻。而英語中有可愛的米老鼠（Mickey Mouse）形象，它給全世界的人們，特別是小孩，留下了美好的印象。愿鼠年帶給人們好運！
