Exterior view
Dalian is located at the southern end of the Liaodong Peninsula, where the light and shadow of waves and hills present the natural scenery of the coastal city. Riding west along the intercity road, one would feel the suburban atmosphere far away from the city as the sea breeze rages. The site of the Software Park is located on a narrow slope between a main road and a hillside, which is in a cherry orchard some 30 kilometres away from the city centre. The layout of the building blocks has to be extended aligning to both sides of the contours. The terrace where the main building is located is 20 metres above the city road, where the green hills look beautiful and tempting. The building volumes are placed according to the mountain shapes, and an S-shaped road up the hill is the only possible solution.
The headquarter of Huaxin (International)Software Park was completed in 2013,accommodating a staff of 4000 people with a total floor area of 161,200 m2. The first design concern is that the building is situated in the mountains in a cold region. The second concern is that it is large in scale and complex in function. The main building, facing south, fits into the terrain and has a compact layout with volumes stepping backwards. As one drives up the hill along the winding road, the perspectives are constantly changing. Passing through the large-span doorway, one enters the 20-metre-high main entrance plaza, which provides a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains. The design takes full advantage of the characteristics of the mountainous area, connecting the entrances and exits of the two-storey underground garage to the exterior roads that are on different levels, so that the staff restaurant can obtain natural lighting on one side. Terraced gardens are arranged around the buildings following the topographic features, connected by ramps.
The main concern when designing office space for software development at the headquarters of the IT industry is the efficiency of various programmes including offices, research, and data centres, while maintaining the flexibility of spaces. The podium contains a lecture hall, conference rooms, a clubhouse, a café, an art gallery, as well as spaces for international exchange. The buildings serve as service centres containing canteens and gyms, hotels for experts, and staff dormitories. All buildings are connected by wide corridors that run through the interior, with atriums and resting spaces in the middle. Walking inside the buildings is like waking in urban streets and plazas, which is particularly suitable for the dynamic teamwork and communication of the IT industry.
The proposal adopts a 4.5 (4.8) m×1.5 m curtain wall unit to install large-scale Low-E insulated glass. Each unit has a 45° right-angled triangular hollow corner column on the vertical side, with an inviable bar window inside, making the operable vent invisible in the front and expressing the overall sense of the material texture. The protruding triangle of each unit reflects the changing light and shadow, looking very vivid.
Site plan
Aerial view
From a distance, the skins of the buildings on the hillside look transparent and light. When one walks into the buildings and looks up to the sky, the buildings would seem to disappear into the surroundings. The abstract composition used in the proposal is a response to today's trend of increasingly large-scale office spaces, and embodies sustainability, flexibility, openness of interior spaces, and fluidity of vertical spaces. The buildings are connected, which is suitable for the cold northern regions where people enjoy working indoors all day.In terms of building details, the curtain wall units have separated lighting and ventilation components, ensuring a unified appearance and easy access to natural ventilation. The mountain environment is introduced indoors. As the sun shines and the mountain breezes flow, people co-exist with nature in the buildings. (Translated by MU Zhuo'er)
