word-a-day:

alfresco 戶外,露天(副詞/ 形容詞)

(adverb/adjective) Taking place or located in the open air (not in a room). (NOTE: “fresco” in Italian is “fresh” in English)

EXAMPLE: At special dinners in the summer, my family likes to dine alfresco on the large terrace of our apartment.

在夏季的重要晚宴上,我的家人喜歡在我們公寓的大露臺上露天用餐。

badinage 玩笑(名詞)

(noun) Clever, frivolous conversation with many light jokes.

EXAMPLE: I usually get bored at company parties listening to the tedious badinage of my colleagues.

在公司的聚會上聽到同事乏味的玩笑,我總是覺得很無聊。

beamish 歡快的(形容詞)

(adjective) Smiling and radiant with optimistic joy.

EXAMPLE: Every morning I'm delighted by my beamish and talkative young son, who will be three-years old tomorrow.

bifurcate 分流(動詞)

(verb) To divide into two branches (said of roads or rivers).

EXAMPLE: The great river bifurcates into two large channels before entering the sea.

bleary 1. 模糊的(形容詞);2. 朦朧的(形容詞)

1. (adjective) Describing indistinct or hazy images.

EXAMPLE: I'm a terrible photographer, so it's not any fun to look at my bleary vacation photos.

2. (adjective) Tired and unable to think or see clearly.

EXAMPLE: I can't sleep on airplanes, so my eyes are always bleary after an over-night flight.

drizzle 1. 細(xì)雨(名詞);2. 滴下(動詞)

1. (noun) A light, misty rain.

EXAMPLE: It rained heavily last night, but this morning only a faint drizzle was falling.

2. (verb) To moisten with light drops.

EXAMPLE: The chef carefully drizzles delicate oil over the noodles.

(IDIOM) Extremely dangerous, almost hopeless circumstances.

EXAMPLE: The recent loss of our best sales representatives to an aggressive rivalirm means that our company now faces dire straits.

over the top 過度夸張(非正式)

(INFORMAL) Highly exaggerated, usually in an inappropriate manner;outrageous. (NOTE:“over-the-top”when used as an adjective phrase)

EXAMPLE: My adolescent niece often acts a little over the top at quiet family gatherings by wearing loud clothing and costly jewels to draw attention to herself.

the shape of things to come 未來趨勢

Describing the start of a new trend that will continue into the future.

EXAMPLE: Extreme changes in weather appear to be the shape of things to come.

to drink like a fish 飲酒過量(成語)

(IDIOM) To habitually drink excessive amounts of alcohol.

EXAMPLE: Although we're fond of our uncle, he drinks like a fish at weddings and parties, and his behavior is embarrassing.

盡管我們都喜歡我們的叔叔,但他在婚禮和聚會上總是飲酒過量,舉止讓人難堪。

to fall on stony ground 被忽略

Either to be ignored or to receive negative responses after making suggestions or proposals.

EXAMPLE: The eager new employee's imaginative ideas fell on stony ground, and none of them were adopted.

to have your back 完全支持(成語)

(IDIOM) To support you protectively; to defend from any attack on any side.

EXAMPLE: My bright and reliable business partner knows he'll always have my back so he's never afraid to suggest daring new ideas.
