It all started because Lynn and her two teenage children needed to get from Georgia to Alaska, where Lynn’s husband, an American officer, is stationed (駐扎). Lynn packed up all their belongings, bought a 4×4 truck, and started a cross-country family adventure. The first 3,000 miles of the trip went well.
The farther north they traveled, the worse the weather got. Lynn, who was raised in the South, met her first winter white-out conditions. Then she used up windscreen wiping fluid. Slush (雪泥) covered her windows and she couldn’t see to drive. Even scarier—her tires seemed to be sliding on the ground.
After changing the summer tires at a tire store, Lynn decided to give up driving. She phoned her husband and asked if he could just come and get them where they were. Her husband was worried but he wasn’t legally able to get them himself. Then the family had to find a hotel and went to bed. That’s when the kind people there put out a request on social media for someone to drive them the last 1,056 miles to the border.
Gary Bath was at home when he saw his friend’s post about the trapped family. After watching the post for a while and seeing no one was able to help, he and his wife made the decision that he would drive them the whole way to the border.
Both families met over the Internet, and when they decided they were all comfortable with the plan, the Baths drove to meet the family at the hotel. It took Gary two days to drive them to a border checkpoint where the family was greeted by Lynn’s husband and the new friends parted ways.
24. Why did the American family set off for Alaska?
A. To enjoy the beautiful landscape. B. To have a family get-together.
C. To visit an old friend." " " " D. To have an adventure.
25. What is Paragraph 2 mainly about?
A. The birthplace of Lynn." " " B. The difficulties Lynn got into.
C. The direction of this journey." D. The weather conditions on the way.
26. How did people in the hotel help the family?
A. By asking for public help." " B. By telephoning the husband.
C. By offering them free meals." D. By driving them to the border.
27. What words can best describe Gary Bath?
A. Serious and careful. B. Brave and creative. C. Kind and caring. D. Smart and honest.

Brothers and sisters can actually strengthen your physical and mental health. Here’s how.
Having a younger sibling (兄弟姐妹) might make you leaner. A study by University of Michigan found that children who, when a new brother or sister arrived, were six or under had a healthier BMI. Given that childhood weight issues can turn into adult weight problems, having a younger brother or sister might well resolve the annoyance.
Sisters can protect you from depression (抑郁). Sisters whether younger or older, help prevent their teenage siblings from feeling guilty, unloved, lonely, shy and fearful, according to a study from Brigham University. That will benefit you even when you reach adulthood.
Having brothers and sisters makes you more charitable. The same research found that having siblings made you twice as likely to do good deeds. A study of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research found that if a sibling was warm and kind, the other sibling was likely to display the same qualities.
They’re a spirit booster in later life. Research has found that having a meaningful relationship with brothers and sisters when you’re older can lead to greater life satisfaction, greater psychological wellbeing, higher spirit and fewer depressive symptoms (癥狀). That is important as you enter old age.
They help you live longer. In a study from the American Sociological Association, older adults who described themselves as being “extremely close” to the family members they listed had a 6% chance of dying over the next five years, compared to a 14% risk for the people who reported not being very close to the family members listed.
Having good friends can bring many of the same benefits. We don’t all have brothers and sisters, or you might be distant from yours. Don’t panic; research also shows that having close friends can boost your health, wellbeing and longevity. Make friends by signing up to groups or classes and finding people who enjoy the same things as you.
28. What does the underlined word “l(fā)eaner” in Paragraph 1 probably mean?
A. Thinner. B. Taller. C. Smarter. D. Kinder.
29. What benefit can a teen get from his/her sisters according to Paragraph 3?
A. Being more understanding. B. Having a healthier body.
C. Enjoying mental health. D. Being more independent.
30. Whose study shows that siblings help one with a longer life?
A. Brigham University. B. University of Michigan.
C. The American Sociological Association. D. The Canadian Institutes of Health Research.
31. What is the purpose of the text?
A. To help teens make good friends. B. To introduce the benefits of siblings.
C. To help keep good family relationship. D. To suggest following siblings’ advice.

Every aspect of our lives has changed, including our eating habits. Comfort food was made for times like these, and it seems the healthy-food trend that took root in recent years is reversing (徹底轉(zhuǎn)變), at least for the time being. Shopping habits have changed to be in favor of old processed foods like frozen pizza and hot cakes, convenience foods with long shelf life (長保質(zhì)期) that are designed.
No judgment here. Money is tight in many households, and busy parents are putting breakfast, lunch and dinner on the table in between video conference meetings. Besides, convenience foods are engineered to taste good and make us feel good (at least in the short term).
But you might want to save room for something green on your plate, if you can find it at the store. That’s because a growing body of research is showing that our food choices don’t just affect our waistlines. What we eat also may affect our moods and behavior and not in the “I can’t believe I ate a dozen cookies in one sitting” sort of way. Rather, there may be something in the food we’re eating that’s influencing our state of mind.
The emerging (新興的) field of nutritional psychology states that modern western diets have contributed to increased rates of mental illness, particularly depression. Diets that follow a Mediterranean pattern of eating with a lot of fruits, vegetables, whole grains, nuts, beans, fish and olive oil have been connected with lower rates of depression. A diet change of just a few weeks has been found to lift moods.
32. Why are convenience foods with long shelf life designed?
A. To meet customers’ shopping habits. B. To protect the environment.
C. To reduce food waste. D. To compete at low prices.
33. What does the research mentioned in Paragraph 3 tell us?
A. Cookies are a kind of food you like while sitting.
B. Food choices may influence our moods.
C. Eating a lot can make you feel tired.
D. A growing body needs proper sports.
34. What can we infer about the Mediterranean eating from the last paragraph?
A. It helps get rid of depression. B. It causes mental illness.
C. It includes too much fat. D. It’s healthy.
35. What can be the best title for the text?
A. How Can We Beat Depression? B. Can Healthy Food Provide Relief?
C. Do Food Choices Affect Our habits? D. What Can Contribute to Mental Illness?

There are a few personal qualities we can all develop to bring more success into our lives. They come from small changes we make throughout our lives, one step and one day at a time. 36
Patience. This is probably one of the most difficult of the personal qualities to develop. 37 To achieve true success and happiness in your life, you need to train patience. Only through patience will you gain the clarity (清晰的思維) required to overcome the problems that you face in life.
Courage. Far too often I see people fail to reach their potential (潛力) because they’re afraid. They aren’t afraid of growth, but they’re afraid of taking risks. 38 So stop fearing what could go wrong and begin focusing on what could go right.
Self-confidence. You need to believe that you have what it takes to achieve your goals. 39 It truly is that simple. To be successful, you first need to have belief in your abilities. If you don’t, you may not take action to move forward or improve yourself fully.
Integrity (正直). Integrity is super important. 40 Practice this quality daily. The best way to cultivate integrity in your life is by being honest, and open in everything that you do.
A. You need to trust yourself.
B. Few things in life happen overnight.
C. Understand your strengths and weaknesses.
D. This fear prevents them from achieving their goals.
E. Living an honest and successful life may be difficult without it.
F. The better you perform, the more success will find its way back to you.
G. The most successful people are those who are the best problem-solvers.
