When LeeAnn Kriegh moved to Bend, Oregon, in 2012, she fell in love with the trees, birds and flowers. Then she began to read nature guidebooks.

“There wasn’t a book that met my needs,” Kriegh said. “I had all the field guides. And they were wonderful, but they didn’t tell me stories or teach me the basics and those were what I needed.” Kriegh’s book, The Nature of Bend, was published in 2016. And Kriegh wanted to encourage others to become published authors. She spent about 2,000 hours working on her guidebook, in which she covered 350 species (物種).

“You should be ready to spend time on the topic you write about,” Kriegh said. “It’s a lot of work, and you have to have a strong liking for your subject,” she added, “or it’s going to be put aside.”

At first, Kriegh began by sending a plan to a book publisher. Half a year passed before the publisher said no to Kriegh. What he said was that central Oregon seemed too small a market. Kriegh remembered his words. During that time she made a decision that she would take care of all the book’s elements on her own rather than depend on another publisher.

Being a self-publisher, she not only picked up the check for printing, but she also paid for the other parts like marketing that were paid by a publisher. Kriegh worked with more than 40 photographers and local naturalists, and read through many scientific papers for the book.

She’s heard a lot of positive remarks (評論) about the way she’s shown facts and stories about these species that help people feel connected and put a smile on their faces.

Kriegh is now working on The Nature of Portland. She hopes it will attract people in cities.

“The purpose of the book is to get people more interested in nature,” Kriegh said. “The more you know about it, the more you care about it and work to take care of it.”

Cuckoos are masters of cheating. When it comes to raising young, they don’t spend the energy building a nest, protecting eggs or feeding children. Instead, the female passes these roles on to other birds. They don’t raise their own young. Usually, they lay their eggs in the nests of other birds, fooling other birds into thinking the cuckoo eggs are theirs.

To succeed in doing this, a female cuckoo watches over her chosen nest to observe feeding times. When the host parent leaves its nest in search of food, the cuckoo quickly lays her eggs among those already in the nest. Sometimes, she will even destroy and remove one of the host’s eggs to make room for her own.

Cuckoos are medium-sized birds with long tails, and often have gray or brown backs. When they hatch (孵化) and begin to grow in a host’s nest, the difference between the two can be obvious to an onlooker. Often the cuckoo is twice the size of its host parents, but still continues to receive food from them.

The cuckoo imposter (冒名頂替者) is usually the only baby bird that the host parent has to care for. This is because when the cuckoo hatches after around 11 days, it gets rid of all the other eggs in the nest. It will lift each egg onto its back before throwing them one by one over the edge of the nest. Even then, the non-biological parent will continue to treat it as one of its own.

Also, cuckoos have developed to produce eggs that are similar in color to their main hosts’. This reduces the chances of eggs being attacked. Female cuckoos have been known to take host birds’ attention away after laying their eggs by producing a noise similar to Eurasian sparrowhawks, scaring birds away from returning to the nest and allowing time for the cuckoo to make her escape unnoticed.

5. What do mother cuckoos usually do when it comes to raising their young?

A. Attend to eggs. B. Build a new nest. C. Rely on other birds. D. Learn feeding skills.

6. What does the underlined word “them” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A. Other cuckoos. B. Baby cuckoos. C. Its host parents. D. Its birth parents.

7. What can be inferred about the cuckoo imposter?

A. It looks much larger than the other eggs.

B. It throws all the other eggs out of nests.

C. It usually hatches out earlier than the other eggs.

D. It makes a noise to scare other birds away from the nest.

8. The text mainly tells us how cuckoos .

A. fool other birds B. produce eggs C. destroy others’ nests D. protect their children
