Suzhou in East China’s Jiangsu Province is famous for many wonderful classical-style gardens in China. Here are some greatest gardens worth visiting.
Humble Administrator’s Garden
It’s the largest and the most famous garden in Suzhou, perhaps the finest of its type in China. Throughout the centuries, the central part of the garden still contains its original flavor of the Ming Dynasty. Since it is such a large garden, with caves, forests, islands, bridges, paths, and all sorts of pavilions and halls, no simple word can be enough to describe the garden.
Lingering Garden
The 2.3-hectare Lingering Garden was first built in 1593. The garden has Chinese couplets(對聯(lián))beside nearly every gate and door. These are two-line poems written in classical Chinese, their use in the garden is meant to set the tone for each section by describing or drawing attention to different features of the garden in a poetic way.
Lion Forest Garden
At a little more than one hectare in size, the Lion Forest Garden was first built in 1342. The garden gets its name because it is filled with strangely shaped rocks which are said to look like lions posing in various shapes. The garden’s many paths wind(蜿蜒向前)through countless caves and rocks, making it easy to get lost. Apart from being beautiful and interesting, the garden is perhaps the oldest rock garden of its kind, making it important-historically.
Yiyuan Garden
At 0.6 hectares, the Yiyuan Garden is one of the smallest of the important gardens in Suzhou. Centered in a pond, a huge rockery, 7.2 meters in height, was created by using nearly ever technique known in the art form. A winding path goes through and around the rockery, allowing it to be viewed from many directions—each direction gives a different idea of what the rocks represent.

Christian Eijkman, a Dutch doctor, left the Netherlands for the island of Java. Many people on the island had a disease called beriberi. He was going there to try and find a cure.
At first, Eijkman thought some kind of germ(細菌)caused beriberi. He raised some chickens. He didn’t eat them, but made experiments on them. The local people were quite surprised at that. One day he noticed that his chickens became sick when they were fed the food most Javanese ate—refined white rice(精煉米). When he fed them with unrefined rice, also known as brown rice, they recovered. Eijkman realized that he had made an important discovery—that some things in food could prevent disease. These things were named vitamins(維生素). The Javanese were not getting enough vitamins because they had actually removed the part that contains vitamins. Later, other diseases were also found to be caused by the lack of vitamins in a person’s food.
Today many people know the importance of vitamins and they make sure they have enough vitamins from the food they eat. If they don’t, they can also take vitamin pills.

There was once a captain who loved money so much that he cheated his sailors at the end of every voyage and took their wages.
On the last day of one voyage, the ship was in a small port. It was winter time, and the sea was very cold, so the captain said to his sailors,“If one of you stays in the water during the whole night, I will give him my ship. But if he comes out before the sun appears, I shall get his wages.”
The sailors had heard about the captains’cheating, so they didn’t trust him. But then one of them, who thought that he was cleverer than the captain, said that he would do it. He got into the water, and, though it was very cold, he stayed in it. When it was nearly morning, some fishermen lit a fire on the shore about half a mile away.
“You are cheating,”the captain said to the sailor.“The fire’s warming you.”

“I can,”answered the captain.
“If you cook this chicken,”said the sailor,“I shall work for you without wages for seven years, but if you can not, you will give me your ship.”
The captain agreed, took the chicken and said,“Where is the fire?”
“There it is,”answered the sailor.“On the shore.”

A Minnesota nursing home has begun using two Al-powered robots as care assistants for those with dementia(癡呆). The Pepper and NAO robots, both built by Softbank, were customized(定做)by roboticists at the University of Minnesota Duluth(UMD)to interact and improve the independence of residents at The Estates at Roseville, followed by another seven nursing homes.
The four-foot-tall Pepper and two-foot-tall NAO are set to engage with patients through conversation and observation. The human-shaped robots can read facial expressions, body language, and vocal tones(聲調)while adjusting their own faces and voices to imitate human interaction. The robots are programmed to remind residents to exercise and eat, leading them to dance and tell jokes. They will watch for changing habits of residents and even use“cognitive therapy(認知療法)”to encourage mental agility.
UMD professor of computer science Arshia Khan and her graduate students customized Pepper and NAO for the nursing home, which is run by Monarch Healthcare Management. They’ve begun training the robots to learn the facility floor plans so that Pepper and NAO can travel independently while on duty.
Softbank began producing Pepper back in 2014, but paused last year, having only made 27, 000. This kind of use case might spark a revival, however. Using robots for healthcare is steadily growing in popularity. For instance, the cat-faced Mylo is designed to be a friendly, comforting image for people with Alzheimers to interact with on a daily basis. And the New York State Office for the Aging recently gave out free ElliQ robot companions to 800 older adults living independently.
“Humanoid robots helping the elderly is the way to move ahead in caring for our elderly,”Khan said.“The growth of the aging population, people affected with dementia, staff shortages and lack of people who can care for our elderly are problems that are growing rapidly. If we don’t look for novel approaches and think outside the box our elders will suffer.”
47. What is the main duty of Pepper and NAO in nursing homes?
A.To clean facilities.
B. To provide medical supplies.
C.To perform medical procedures.
D.To promote patient care and independence.
48. Why are the AI-powered robots trained to learn the facility floor plans?
A. To enable them to move independently while performing their tasks.
B. To test their mobility and flexibility in complex environments.
C. To ensure they avoid interacting with certain residents.
D. To draw an accurate map of the nursing home.
49. What does the underlined part“spark a revival”in paragraph 4 probably mean?
A. Encourage a discussion.
B. Generate a downfall.
C. Inspire a comeback.
D. Call for an end.
50. What is the last paragraph mainly about?
A.The necessity of employing more nursing workers.
B.The difficulty in achieving technological breakthroughs.
C.The concern for the rapid growth in the aging population.
D. The importance of using human-shaped robots in aged care.
