The 9th International Conference on Hydrodynamics (ICHD), held in Shanghai, China from 11 to 15 October, 2010, was briefly reviewed. More than 240 delegates from 23 countries and regions attended this Conference, at which three plenary lectures, two keynote lectures and more than 160 papers were delivered. A special symposium on hydrodynamics in honor of Prof. You-sheng He was jointly organized in this ICHD. The printed proceedings, edited by Y. S. Wu, S. Q. Dai, H. Liu et al. and published by China Ocean Press, collect 172 technical papers contributed from 26 countries and regions. The electronic proceedings are distributed by the Elsevier at the ScienceDirect website as “Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2010, Vol. 22, No. 5 (Supplement)”.

The 9th International Conference on Hydrodynamics (ICHD) was successfully held in Shanghai, China from 11 to 15 October, 2010. More than 240 delegates are from 23 countries and regions, including Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, France, Germany, India, Iran, Italy, Japan, Korea, The Netherlands, Norway, Portugal, Russia, Singapore, Sweden, UK, Ukraine, and USA.

The first ICHD was initiated in 1994 in Wuxi, China. Since then it was subsequently held every two years in Hong Kong (China), Seoul (Korea), Yokohama (Japan), Tainan (China), Perth (Australia), Ischia (Italy), and Nantes (France)[1]. The ICHD has attracted more and more attention and participation from the researchers and engineers around the world. The overall objective of the ICHD is to “provide a forum for participants from around the world to review, discuss and present the latest developments in the broad disciplines of hydrodynamics and fluid mechanics”[2].

The 9th ICHD was jointly organized by the Editorial Board of Journal of Hydrodynamics (EBJHD), China Ship Scientific Research Center (CSSRC), Shanghai Jiao Tong University (SJTU), Shanghai University (SHU), and University of Warwick (UWW), and was jointly sponsored by China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC), China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), the Mechanical and Vehicle Engineering Division of Chinese Academy Engineering (CAE-MVED), the Chinese Hydraulic Engineering Society (CHES), the Chinese Society of Naval Architects and Marine Engineers (CSNAME), the Chinese Society of Oceanography (CSO), the Chinese Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (CSTAM), the Editorial Board of Journal of Hydrodynamics (EBJHD), the Hong Kong Society of Theoretical and Applied Mechanics (HKSTAM), theInternational Association of Hydraulic Engineering and Research (IAHR), the Japan Society of Civil Engineers (JSCE), the Japan Society of Naval Architects and Ocean Engineers (JASNAOE), the Korea Association of Ocean Science & Technology (KAOST), the K. C. Wong Foundation of Education (HK), the National Natural Science Foundation of China (NSFC), and the Royal Institute of Naval Architects (RINA).

The opening ceremony, chaired by Prof. Shi-qiang Dai, Co-Chairman of the local organizing committee (LOC) for the 9th ICHD, began at 9:00AM on 12 October 2010 in the Jin Sha Hotel, Shanghai. On the ceremony, Prof. Jia-chun Li, President of the CSTAM, took a snapshot of some important progresses on hydrodynamics in the past 50 years in China. Prof. You-sheng Wu, Chairman of the LOC for the 9th ICHD and Chairman of the Executive Committee of ICHD, briefly reviewed the development of the ICHD and the Journal of Hydrodynamics in the recent decades.

Three plenary lectures, two keynote lectures and more than 160 papers were presented at the conference. The speakers and titles of the three plenary lectures are listed as follows:

(1) P. A. Madsen (Technical University of Denmark): “On the evolution and run-up of tsunamis”.

(2) G. Kuiper (Consultant, Bennekom, The Netherlands): “New developments and propeller design”.

(3) Xi-yun Lu (University of Science and Technology of China): “Studies of hydrodynamics in fishlike swimming propulsion”.

A special symposium on hydrodynamics in honor of Prof. You-sheng He is organized in this ICHD, for celebrating Prof. Y. S. He’s 80th birthday, and in recognition of his great contribution to the development of science and technology in the fields of cavitating flows and environmental hydrodynamics. Two invited keynote lectures, entitled by “Can fishes in swim form laminar flows for low drag, as ever or not?” and“Three-dimensional hydroelasticity analysis of acoustic responses of ship structures, were delivered by Theodore Y. Wu (California Institute of Technology) and You-sheng Wu (CSSRC), respectively, in the Y. S. He symposium.

About 160 papers were presented in the parallel technical sessions. There were 26 parallel technical sessions for the general presentation and discussion in three meeting rooms and 6 sessions for the Y. S. He symposium in one meeting room. All the papers contributed to the general sessions fall into eight categories, namely (1) theoretical hydrodynamics, (2) computational fluid dynamics, (3) experiments and measurements in hydrodynamics, (4) industrial hydrodynamics, (5) naval hydrodynamics, ocean engineering and coastal engineering, (6) environmental hydrodynamics, (7) hydraulic engineering and water Conservancy, and (8) cavitation and multi-phase flow. The topics of the Y. S. He symposium include cavitation, water-entry/exit hydrodynamics, computational fluid dynamics, water wave dynamics, and environmental fluid mechanics.

The 1038-page printed proceedings, edited by Y. S. Wu, S. Q. Dai, H. Liu et al. and published by the China Ocean Press with an ISBN 978-7-5027-7834-7, collect 172 technical papers contributed from 26 countries and regions[2]. The electronic proceedings are distributed by the Elsevier at the ScienceDirect website[3]as “Journal of Hydrodynamics, 2010, Vol. 22, No. 5 (Supplement)”. Every paper has a digital object identifier (DOI).

The closing ceremony, chaired by Prof. You-Sheng Wu, began at 5:30PM on 14 October 2010 in the Oriental Pearl TV Tower Rotating Hall, Shanghai. Prof. Ping-Tao Huang, President of the CSNAME, and Prof. Zhen-ping Weng, Director of the CSSRC, delivered speeches on behalf of the sponsor and the organizer for the 9th ICHD,respectively, to thank all the authors and presenter for their great contribution to the Conference. Prof. Alexander Pustoshny from Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (Russia), on behalf of the LOC for the next ICHD, briefly introduced the proposal for the 10th ICHD in 2012.

The Executive Committee of ICHD decided on 11 October, 2010 that the 10th ICHD will be held in St. Petersburg (Russia) at the beginning of October in 2012 and be hosted by Krylov Shipbuilding Research Institute (KSRI)[4]. The correspondence of the conference secretariat will be
