There are gains for all our losses,
There are balms1 for all our pain;
But when youth, the dream, departs2
It takes something from our hearts,
And it never comes again.
We are stronger, and are better,
Under manhoods sterner3 reign;
Still we feel that something sweet,
Followed youth, with flying feet,
And will never come again.
Something beautiful is vanished,
And we sigh for it in vain4;
We behold5 it everywhere,
On the earth, and in the air,
But it never comes again!
我們的一切損失,都還可以補(bǔ)償,
我們的一切痛苦,還會(huì)得到安慰;
但當(dāng)青春這理想之夢(mèng)消逝時(shí),
它卻從我們心頭帶走了某種東西,
一去不復(fù)回!
在成年生活的嚴(yán)峻考驗(yàn)下,
我們變得比原來(lái)強(qiáng),比原來(lái)美;
但我們?nèi)匀桓械侥撤N甜蜜的東西,
以飛快的步伐隨著青春而流逝,
一去不復(fù)回!
某種美麗的東西已經(jīng)消失,
我們嘆息已無(wú)用,也無(wú)從后悔;
我們雖然處處還能看到它的影蹤,
不論是在地上,還是在空中,
但它一去不復(fù)回!
