l. Introduction

To learn a foreign language well under a certain kind of nonlinguistic Circumstance, you must do a lot of reading. As we all know, reading has been playing an important role in learning a foreign language all the time.

According to the purpose of reading, we may divide reading into applied language reading and learning language reading.

II. The process of reading

Reading is a sort of active thought process through the use of the reader' linguistic knowledge and background knowledge on reading materials.In my opinion,the process of reading can be divided into three levels at least.

l. Literal comprehension level

As for this kind of level,readers just need to understand the literal meaning of the essay,such as identifying and recalling the general idea,details and order of the events, typical characteristic and causality.All the abilities listed above(grammatical ability and linguistic ability) seem quite easy for most beginners.

2. Inferential comprehension level

During this special stage,readers should be able to infer the word meaning. general idea.order. details and typical characteristic according to the structure of' the reading material. To finish this task high-efficiently, you must own solid essential technique. strong apprehension and practical reading skills as well.

3.Evaluative comprehension level

Readers should be capable of evaluating the merits and demerits of the materials by virtue of experience. Such kind of' analysis and evaluation include the accuracy of the message, possibility of' the events, authenticity of the facts, etc.

III. Method~of developing skills of reading comprehension

Skills of reading comprehension can be trained by the means of'intensive readingand extensive reading.

l. Intensive reading

Intensive reading is a complicated process. On the one hand, it refers to understanding for various kinds of ideological contents, written methods and connotation of concepts. On the other hand, it's connected with linguistic structure learning through the use of linguistic materials chosen from texts.

Then how can we improve our ability in reading comprehension?Next,I will give some suggestions from my own teaching experience.

A.After portraying new words to the students, I usually give them some pre-reading questions and post-reading questions in order to help them understand the content and feedback the level of' reading comprehension.

B.Explain necessary language points through the study of texts. Analysis of Complex,sentences is quite difficult for middle school students. As a teacher, we should give a detailed explanation on the structure of sentences. The order of the words within an English sentence doesn't usually agree with that of' Chinese. The attributive parts in English are often put behind the words modified. while things are quite different from Chinese attributive components.As for those complex sentences with too many modifying parts, we should pick out the subject and predicate first. And then try to differentiate the clauses。

C.Develop the students'ability of looking up words in the dictionaries and explaining English words in English.

D.Develop the students' ability of giving the general idea oi'the materials and inducing central idea of' the texts. which has been a proper method in training the students' ability 01' retelling and writing.In addition. it's necessary to expound easy rhetoric to students. Through knowledge or rhetoric, students may deepen understanding, feelings and enjoyment of' the texts.

2.Extensive reading

As a teachers should replenish a certain amount of' out-of-class reading materials.

Touching the field of outside reading, you must pay attention to the following points:

A.Pay attentionto the characteristic of reading. ---silent reading .

B.Try to overcome the habit of looking back repeatedly,

C.With the development of students' reading ability,ask students to finish the reading work in a limited time or record the time needed in reading.

D.New words can't be avoided in outside reading. When students arc engaged in taking exams.they aren't allowed to use dictionaries. We can guess the meaning of the words.

How can the readers make improvements in reading?

There are many skills to improve one's ability of reading comprehension.

One of the most important skills in reading is the knowledge of' word .

In order to improve reading ability, it's essential to memorize words and master the ways or guessing the meaning of'words. besides, when reading,you should catch the phrases as a unit of meaning and view the sentences as a unit of meaning.having known the parts of' the passage, we will search for the meaning of the paragraph.

Make inferences while reading is another means to improve reading ability.

Finally, trying to make progress in speed is an efficient wav to improve reading ability .IV. Conclusion

In a word, reading involves muchknowledge and common sense.you should master these skills.The more practice you do, the easier you get the information.
