2017年新年前夕，習(xí)近平主席通過中國國際廣播電臺、中央電視臺和互聯(lián)網(wǎng)等新聞媒體，發(fā)表了熱情洋溢、催人奮進(jìn)的新年賀詞，引發(fā)媒體和網(wǎng)友的熱議。賀詞中使用的一些金句更是刷屏微博和朋友圈，成為新年最熱詞句，比如“上下同欲者勝”“大家擼起袖子加油干”“天上不會掉餡餅”“小康路上一個都不能掉隊(duì)”等。本期我們就來談?wù)劇皵]起袖子加油干”的翻譯。

習(xí)主席講話原文：只要我們13億多人民和衷共濟(jì)，只要我們黨永遠(yuǎn)同人民站在一起，大家擼起袖子加油干，我們就一定能夠走好我們這一代人的長征路。

目前該習(xí)語的英譯，主要來自兩大官方媒體：中國國際廣播電臺（CRI）和中央電視臺（CCTV）。

CRI版譯文：So long as the 1.3 billion people pull together in forging ahead， the Party stands identified with the people， and the nation remains mobilized for brand new endeavors， we will surely accomplish the Long March of our generation.

CCTV版譯文：Only if the 1.3 billion-plus people work together with one heart， the Party always stands with the people， and we roll up our sleeves and work with added energy， can we succeed in the Long March of our generation.

我們先來對這兩種譯文做下對比和分析?？偟膩砜?，兩種譯文都較為準(zhǔn)確地傳達(dá)了賀詞所要表達(dá)的意義，但二者在翻譯理念和方法上體現(xiàn)出顯著的不同，翻譯效果也有較大的差異。

就“大家擼起袖子加油干”的翻譯來說，CRI版譯文回譯成漢語大致是“全國人民和以往一樣被動員起來了，進(jìn)行全新的努力”，采用了意譯的翻譯方法，字面意義和原文相差較大，首先是沒有保留“擼起袖子加油干”的形象，而是對其意義進(jìn)行闡釋；其次，原文帶有明顯的口語化色彩，通俗易懂，譯文則變成書面語，失去了原語生動活潑的特點(diǎn)。CCTV版譯文則保留了“擼起袖子”的形象，同時(shí)也保留了原文口語化、接地氣的特點(diǎn)，因而比CRI版譯文技高一籌。

“擼起袖子”的英譯

那么，為什么要在譯文中保留“擼起袖子”的形象呢？

我們知道，本屆領(lǐng)導(dǎo)人一向重視務(wù)實(shí)、親民的工作作風(fēng)，在講話中也注重使用通俗易懂、生動活潑的群眾語言。就本篇講話而言，語言上最顯著的特征是融傳統(tǒng)文化與大眾語言于一體：一方面引經(jīng)據(jù)典，隱含博大的中華文化，比如“新故相推，日生不滯”（語出明末清初思想家王夫之的《尚書引義·太甲》）、“上下同欲者勝”（語出春秋末年軍事家孫武的《孫子·謀攻》）等；一方面則使用人民群眾生動活潑的生活語言，比如“天上不會掉餡餅”“擼起袖子加油干”等。這些群眾語言既通俗易懂，又體現(xiàn)了習(xí)主席貼近民眾、接地氣的親民風(fēng)格。因此，在譯文中忠實(shí)地傳達(dá)出這一特征就顯得尤為重要。

再者，“擼起袖子”聽起來更加果敢，有一種不怕臟、不怕累，擼起袖子說干就干的豪邁氣概。

巧合的是，英語中也同樣存在“擼起袖子”的說法，即roll up ones sleeves，而且和漢語完美對應(yīng)。和漢語一樣，它也有字面意義和比喻意義，據(jù)McGraw-Hills Dictionary of American Idioms and Phrasal Verbs，該表達(dá)的字面意義為“to turn ones sleeves upward， exposing the arms”，例如：

①He rolled his sleeves up and began to wash the dishes.

②Don rolled up his sleeves so he would be cooler.

固定表達(dá)roll up ones sleeves的比喻意義為“to prepare to get to work”，例如：

Lets roll our sleeves up and get this job done！

在英語中，roll up ones sleeves常用作比喻意義，既可用作一般的動詞短語，也可用作修飾語，例如：

①Roll up your sleeves and get going， man！

②So today， I am asking you to roll up your sleeves and join in the work of remaking this nation.

③This will be a hard-working， roll-up-your-sleeves event.

④A hands-on roll-up-your-sleeves executive is preferred.

“加油干”的英譯

我們再來看“加油干”的譯法。CRI版譯為for brand new endeavors，雖然較為達(dá)意，但卻略顯正式，書卷味較濃，不夠口語化、通俗化。CCTV版譯為with added energy，效果要略勝一籌。此外，大家還可以嘗試使用如下更為口語化的表達(dá)，以保持風(fēng)格上的一致性：peg away、put oneself to it、work harder、keep at it、work with added vigor、put on more steam、more power to your elbow、gas up the jet、put a bit more effort into、pitch in、dive in等。例如：

①加油干，同學(xué)們，你們一定會贏的。

Peg away， students， and you are bound to win.

②要是我真的加油干，今天就能把這活干完。

If I really put myself to it， I can finish this work today.

③我告訴她要加油干，可是她只是站在那里咧著嘴微笑。

I told her to work harder and she just stood with a silly grin on her face.

④加油干吧，你很快就能輕輕松松完成那個最重要的任務(wù)。

Keep at it and youll soon be knocking off your most important task easily.

小結(jié)

和roll up your sleeves結(jié)合起來，下面語句都可表達(dá)“擼起袖子加油干”的意思，且都具有口語化特色。
