Roxie Hart is sent to prison for killing a man who tried to walk out on her. While in prison she meets Velma Kelly, a big-time vaudeville star with twice as much blood on her hands. The two vie for the same lawyer, Billy Flynn, to help win their freedom and play the public from prison to help win fame for when they' re finally free.Billy takes Roxie's case and rearranges her story for consumption by sympathetic tabloid columnist.Roxie's press conference turns into a ventriloquist act with Billy dictating a new version of the truth to the press while Roxie mouths the words. Roxie becomes the most popular celebrity in Chicago.
