ADiscussiononthePresentationofScientificSpiritthroughScienceandTechnologyCollections——Taking the EIS Class Gifts Online Exhibition in David J. Sencer CDC Museum as an Example
Liu Wei Yang Mei
Abstract:With the rapid development of the number and size of science and technology museums in China, the problem of attaching importance to scientific knowledge and lack of dissemination of scientific spirit is also exposed in exhibition design. This is not in line with the development requirements of national science popularization undertakings and the tendency of museum industry. How to present the connotation of scientific spirit through exhibition is an important issue the science museum community faces. This paper took the EIS Class Gifts online exhibition in David J. Sencer CDC Museum as an example, discussed the best practices of presenting the connotation of scientific spirit includingpursuingthetruth, skepticism, objectivity, logicand so on through giving play to thephysicalevidencesfunction of science and technology collections as well as using online exhibitions to create more storytelling spaces. These discussions are expected to provide references to science museum community.

AffectiveAffordancesinVirtualMuseums——A Case Study of the Online ResourceObjectsandStoriesfrom the Science Museum in London
Jiang Han
Abstract:Affective experience in virtual museums has received little attention in museum studies. This paper examines the relationship between virtual museums’ experiences and affective affordances from the perspective of Phenomenology. Based on a case study of the online resourceObjectsandStoriesfrom the Science Museum in London, this paper reveals two ways of creating affective affordances: the engagement of sensory modalities and perspective-taking in the narrative.

Abstract:By sorting out the mission, opportunities and challenges of museums as well as the status quo of online education, this paper elaborates the necessity for museums to develop online educational games. According to the theories of museology and pedagogy, combined with the practice of online educational game design, this paper analyzes the problem of three disconnections commonly existing in online educational games of museums at present, puts forward that online educational games of museums should have the characteristics of three combinations, and provides some design ideas to realize the three combinations.

ThePracticalExplorationofCombiningOnlineandOfflineExhibitionandEducationActivitiesofScienceandTechnologyMuseums
Wang Yunxiang Miao Xiujie Zhao Ran Zhang Yingzi
Abstract:The combination of online and offline exhibition and education activities is an important development direction for science and technology museums to expand its own science communication channels in the current network era, and it is also an effective form to enrich museum education. This paper mainly discusses the necessity and design ideas of developing such activities, and analyzes relevant cases. It summarizes the advantages and disadvantages of online and offline education activities as well as the complementary effects of the combination of the two. At the same time, the application of exhibition micro-lesson in exhibition education activities is taken as an example and introduced in detail. It hopes that this example could provide the public of different ages with popular science resources that meet their learning needs, and be contributed to better spreading the science spirit, imparting scientific ideas and scientific methods, cultivating public scientific thinking, and improving the scientific literacy of Chinese citizens steadily.

Abstract:High quality educational resources are important prerequisites for the comprehensive integration and deep development of STEM education, also an important driving force for the transformation of international science education in the 21stcentury. Foreign large-scale scientific facilities actively excavate their educational value and extensively develop STEM educational resources. Their development has the following characteristics: attaching importance to the development of scientific inquiry-based resources in basic education; implementing the multi-agent cooperative development model with scientists as the core; taking curriculum standards as the theoretical guidance. In contrast, the development of educational resources for large-scale scientific facilities in China has the following problems: inadequate policy environment; incomplete funding system; weak developer awareness; poor audience literacy. The future transformation of science resources into education resources should focus on improving the policy system, enhancing the initiative and creativity of developers and audiences, and strengthening the synergy of all sectors of society.

TheResearchandEnlightenmentofCommunicationAbilityofNaturalScienceMuseums’TwitterAccounts
Wang Zheng
Abstract:Based on communication theories, the social media nature of Twitter and the features of natural science museums, this paper sorts out related dimensions and indicators, determines the indicators’ weight by entropy method, constructs an evaluation indicator system of the communication ability of natural science museums’ Twitter accounts. This indicator system is used in empirical research of 14 foreign natural science museums’ Twitter accounts to calculate their communication ability. Based on the research results, this paper summaries experiences and proposes countermeasures to help domestic natural science museums improve their media communication ability.

AResearchonMeasurementsandModellingofSpatialStructureandBodyMorphologyofAbridgedArmillaBasedon3DLaserScanningTechnology
Wang Xuezhi Zhao Yang Zhang Yao Chang Cheng Chen Kang
Abstract:Abridged Armilla is an astronomical instrument for measuring the position of celestial bodies created in 1276 AD by Guo Shoujing, an astronomer who lived during the Yuan Dynasty. It is regarded as the masterpiece and symbol of the achievement of ancient Chinese traditional astronomy. The existing Abridged Armilla is a replica of Guo Shoujing’s. It was made during the Zhengtong period of Emperor Yingzong in Ming Dynasty and is currently on display at the Purple Mountain Observatory. In order to retain the spatial structure and shape information of this important cultural relic as much as possible, it is necessary to carry out an-situ, non-destructive and high-precision measurement research. This paper mainly introduces the research results from the measurements and modelling of spatial structure and body morphology of Abridged Armilla based on 3D laser scanning technology.

APracticalResearchonEvidence-BasedArgumentationintheDevelopmentofEducationalActivitiesofScienceandTechnologyMuseums
Li Yan Chen Xiaojun Bao Xianqing
Abstract:As science education has been paid more and more attention and science and technology museums have become important places for science education, how to design and develop educational activities to achieve the purpose of science education is urgently needed to study. This paper combinesevidence-basedargumentationwith the argumentation model in classroom teaching, and constructs the teaching process ofevidence-basedargumentationadapted for science and technology museums. Based on this teaching process and targeted at students of third-grade, this study designed and developed museum education activities to learn insect knowledge. It is found that based on this teaching process, students’ scientific knowledge has been improved, and there is an effectively augmenting dialogue based on evidence in this activity.

TheThinkingandPracticeoftheCountermeasuretoConcretingAbstractScientificConceptsatScienceandTechnologyMuseums——Taking the Educational ActivitySpaceExploration:MarchofSolarSystemof CSTM as an Example
Sun Weiqiang
Abstract:With the development of science, its related concepts become more and more abstract and deviate from people’s real life, which increases the difficulty of educational activities’ implementation at science and technology museums. This paper analyzes the existing problems, summarizes their features and proposes the teaching idea that CSTM is applying to concretely display abstract concepts. Then, this paper takes the educational activitySpaceExploration:MarchofSolarSystemas an example to demonstrate how to adopt this teaching idea in practice.

Abstract:ToyStoryproject of Hefei Science and Technology Museum, corresponding to thetechnologyandengineeringfield in the primary school science curriculum standard, takes toys that students are interested in and give them company, as the entry point. This teaching scheme regardstheexhibits-basedproblemandprojectdrivenlearningcombining with exhibits and educational activities resources of science and technology museums as main teaching mode. It guides students to solve problems by comprehensively applying the core concepts of disciplines, interdisciplinary concepts and scientific practice, and to imperceptibly experience the importance of engineering technology in solving practical problems and the impact of innovation and development of engineering and technology on society.
