Warm up in winter

With cold weather gripping China, many of us are reaching for more clothes and turning on the heat. In addition to wearing a pair of long johns, increasing our food intake can help protect us against severe cold. So what food keeps us warm?

Red meat

Red meat, such as beef, lamb and pork, is great when you find yourself in cold conditions because it is a fantastic source of iron, which is crucial for circulating(循環(huán))your blood. Iron is an important mineral to help carry oxygen throughout your body. People with low iron may notice cold hands and feet or easily become tired. Eating red meat can also supply vitamin B12, which contributes to healthy nerves and a strong immune(免疫)system, according to US department of Health and Human services.

Oatmeal

Oatmeal can keep you warm in winter. It’s great thermogenic(生熱的)food and is filled with nutrients(營(yíng)養(yǎng)物)that release energy slowly throughout the day to keep your body warm, according to Clarissa Lenherr, a London-based nutritionist. You can start your day with a hot breakfast of oats or other types of porridge. Oats are a great source of whole grains and fiber. Fiber can lower your cholesterol(膽固醇)and make you feel full. In addition to keeping you full and warm, oats are full of other nutrients.

Ginger tea

Hot ginger tea can make you feel warm inside on a cold day. Ginger is known to be good for health. It’s also a diaphoretic(發(fā)汗藥), which means it will help your body warm from the inside. Ginger has great thermogenic properties and helps blood circulation in our bodies, making it a great source of warmth, according to the Daily Mail.

Sweet potatoes

Sweet potatoes and other root vegetables need more energy to move through the digestion process, which raises your body temperature. High in vitamin A, vitamin C and potassium, sweet potatoes add fiber and other nutrients to a warm winter meal. Sweet potatoes also have beta-carotene(β-胡蘿卜素)that is good for eye health, according to BBC Good Food.

Every week, Liu Fang, a 38-year-old media worker in Beijing, goes to a store specializing in selling near-expired food in Sanlitun and returns with a bag of snacks or drinks.

“The price tags on these goods have caught my eyes. They are often sold at 10 percent to 30 percent of the market price,”Liu said.“More importantly, most of them are from big brands. Why wouldn’t I love them?”

Liu is among the increasing number of Chinese people who enjoy purchasing near-expired food at much cheaper prices. According to the latest report by iiMedia Research, the near-expired food industry had a market size of over 30 billion yuan in 2020. Young consumers aged between 26 and 35 accounted for 47.8 percent.

Unlike the traditional thinking that buying such goods is embarrassing, more and more young people regard it as a kind of sustainable consumption that can help reduce food waste.

“I don’t care much about the date as long as I can eat it before its expiry. It meets my demand while saving resources and protecting the environment, which is a good thing,”Wu Lin, a 19-year-old college student and a fan of near-expired food, told Xinhua.

Indeed, food waste is a great challenge for China and other countries. According to a 2020 report from the National People’s Congress, about 18 billion kilograms of food is wasted every year in China’s urban catering industry.

“As more Chinese people choose to buy near-expired food, the food waste will be reduced,”said Liu.

According to CGTN, China has the tradition of saving food over the decades leading to the 1990s.

As people’s lives improved greatly, many began to make or order more food than could be consumed, CGTN reported. But the trend of buying near-expired food may suggest that the Chinese virtue of frugality is staging a comeback.

“I’ve been very frugal all my life. Living through a serious famine(1959~1961)(饑荒), I’m used to saving every grain and every penny,”Zhang Xin, a retired woman born in the 1950s, told CGTN.“I’m happy to see more young people, who used to spend extravagantly(奢侈地), joining our ranks.”

24. Why does Liu Fang buy the near-expired food?

A. Because their bands are new.

B. Because their qualities are good.

C. Because their prices are reasonable.

D. Because their tastes are nice.

25. What did young people think of buying the nearexpired food in the past?

A. It can embarrass the consumers.

B. It can reduce the food waste.

C. It can protect the environment.

D. It can save resources.

26. What can we learn from the passage?

A. The near-expired foods are always in poor quality.

B. Food waste is a great challenge only for China.

C. The tradition of saving food in China can date back to ancient times.

D. Zhang Xin is satisfied to see more young people buying the near-expired food.

27. What is the best title for the passage ?

A. A Tradition of Saving Foods will come back

B. Tasty Food Trend Catches on

C. The Virtue of Frugality Disappears
