I use maps. Not the ones on smartphones. I use real paper maps that you canopen and take out to quickly look through on the road in strange places. Paper mapsare there for you every time you need them and need no recharging"(充電). Theysimply tell you the directions and necessary information.
I’ve traveled in and out of the state with my grandson Connor often enough tointroduce him to this way of getting from place to place. His first reply as an 8-year-old was“Grandma, just use the GPS”. But that was no help since the one inmy old car was totally out of date. As for a smartphone, I didn’t have one. And soConnor is learning to use paper maps, too. Opening one myself is akin to sendingtext messages while driving. Perhaps it was even more distracting (分散注意力的)for me.
Our next trip will be to visit friends in Connecticut, and I’ve just picked up newcopies of the state’s road maps. I’ve marked our way from Providence, RhodeIsland, to Old Saybrook and Durham in Connecticut, then back to Providence. It is away I know much, as I’ve spent several summers doing geologic fieldwork (地質(zhì)野外工作) in the forests and the Connecticut River Valley. Still, I wouldn’t think ofdriving without paper maps. It would be too out of character. It would be liketraveling without a good book.
I’m going over the way with now 13-year-old Connor so that he can follow alongand sometimes answer a question on directions while I’m driving. He looks at roadmaps the same way he looks at my old TV or my mom’s Nokia phone. However, hisnext lesson on navigating"(導(dǎo)航) with paper is around the corner, and I have decidedthat he should learn how to do it. By the time he’s driving himself, I’ll put newmaps in his car. Who knows when a smartphone might be broken down or the GPSmight stop working?
I could really make Connor unhappy by telling him signs of directions such asthe sun, moon, and stars. But enough is enough for a teenager. For this next trip atleast, we’ll depend on paper.
( )31. What does the writer like about paper maps?
A. They can be folded quickly.
B. They can be easily carried.
C. They work in the way people expect.
( )32. We can infer from the passage that _______.

B. the writer will go to the Connecticut River Valley this summer
C. the purpose of the writer’s next trip is to meet her friends
( )33. The underlined word“akin”in the passage means _______.
A. convenient B. similar C. important
( )34. Why does the writer need road maps during her next trip to Connecticut?
A. She knows nothing about this place.
B. She is used to driving with maps.
C. Her grandson asked her to bring maps.
( )35. What will the writer teach Connor during their next trip?
A. How to drive a car.
B. How to draw a map.
C. How to use paper maps.
