The Confucius Institute at FreeUniversity of Berlin (FU Berlin) wasestablished in April 2006 as the first ConfuciusInstitute in the German-speakingworld. It is a collaborative project betweenFU Berlin and PekingUniversity, symbolizinga strong partnership betweenthe two institutions. This collaboration datesback to 1981, when thetwo universities signed acooperation agreement, paving the way for fruitfulexchanges and deeper collaborationacross diversefields. This long-standingrelationship has provideda solid foundation onwhich we have developed a wide range of programs.
From the outset, we have focused onthree main pillars.
The first pillar is language teaching. In this area,we offer both in-person and online language coursesand training programs for teachers and translators. For many years, the training of Chinese languageteachers has been a key focus, supported by the valuableexpertise of our colleagues at Peking University. Our efforts include organizing activities on Chineselanguage days for German primary and secondaryschools, giving students an introduction to theChinese language and culture, which has atrracteda growing number of schools in Berlin participatingin our events. Currently, over 300 secondary schoolstudents in Berlin are studying Chinese, withinterest in China growing among learners. Annually, universities in Berlin host a “Long Night of Sciences”event in which we participate, offering trial Chineselanguage classes. Many visitors are particularlyinterested in writing their “Chinese names” usingChinese calligraphy. People with a general interest inChina also attend these open days to learn about ouractivities.
The second pillar focuses on cultural activities. In summer, we host a series of open air culturalevents in the garden of the Institute, featuring musicand dance performances, as well as demonstrationsof Shaolin Kung Fu. We offer Qigong and Tai Chiclasses, also showcasing the work of German andChinese artists with connections to China throughexhibitions; a particular emphasis is placed on Berlin-based artists. Some exhibitions, such as those onChinese calligraphy, have effectively highlighted thelink between language and culture; the recent “German-Chinese Encounters: A Calligraphy Exhibitionby Chen Hongjiie” blends Chinese calligraphy withthe core philosophies of German thinkers, successfullybridging the two cultures and receiving praise fromBerlin’s media. This exhibition has also been featuredat other Confucius Institutes. We have organizedreading events with renowned Chinese writers such asLi Er, Xu Zechen, and Yan Lianke, and have presentedbooks by German authors on China.
The third pillar concerns academic activities. Both FU Berlin and PekingUn ive r s i t y ar e l e adinginstitutions in their respectivecountries, which enablesus to organize a wide rangeof high-level seminars ontopics such as German-Chinarelations, history, and currentaffairs. We host thematicexhibitions, particularly froma cross-cultural perspective, which explore aspects of German-Chinese relations. Theseinclude exhibitions on CaiYuanpei, the former Presidentof Peking University who hada deep historical connectionwith Germany, and Hu Shi and his relationship withGermany. We have showcased the lives of Germanexperts who spent many years working in China suchas Walter Liebenthal, who published academic workson Chinese Buddhism, and K?the Zhao, a Germanscholar of language and literature who contributedto the development of the German department atPeking University. Some of these exhibitions werejointly organized by the two universities and havebeen displayed at both institutions.
In recent years, we have collaborated withvarious individuals and institutions to organize significantexhibitions, introducing those on Europeansin Shanghai, like the businessman John Rabe. Werecently hosted an exhibition on Hermann Bauer, aGerman businessman who worked in Shanghai fordecades from 1906, playing a key role in the rebuildingof Sino-German economic relations after 1949.In order to attract more visitors over the long term,we have published a series of seminar proceedings, producing brochures for these themed exhibitions.
We have been collaborating with various Chineseand German institutions to raise public awareness ofimportant topics related to China. For example, in2022, we co-hosted a seminar with colleagues fromPeking University to mark the 50th Anniversary ofSino-German Diplomatic Relations. Scholars fromChina, Germany, and the United States consideredthis topic from political, economic, legal, and culturalperspectives, discussing historical lessons and thefuture of bilateral relations. Some of the presentationswere later included in the book German-ChineseRelations: 1972—2022, published in 2023.
The focus at the 2023 seminar was on the currentstate and challenges of Sino-German relations andanalyzing the global factors influencing these ties, with political scientists, economists, sociologists, and historians from both China and Germany takingpart. Since 2021, the Institue has co-hosted an onlinelecture series titled “Chinese Perspectives: China andthe World Through the Eyes of Scholars” in conjunctionwith the Confucius Institutes in Germany andItaly. This series features leading Chinese scholarsdiscussing current issues and developments in Chinaand around the world; to date, some ten prominentChinese scholars have shared their research findings, with these face-to-face online academic exchangesbeing invaluable for broadening knowledge andunderstanding diverse perspectives.
The goal of the Institue is to provide a platformfor the dissemination of knowledge and dialoguefor everyone interested in China, serving both theuniversity community and the wider public. Webelieve that the Confucius Institute at FU Berlinwill continue to play a significant role in fosteringcultural and academic exchanges between China andGermany in the years to come.
