My name is Lilou Bourhis. I am a 23-year-oldfirst-year graduate student in the English-Chineseprogram at the Department of Applied Languages,University of La Rochelle in France. It was a pleasantsurprise for me to become the champion of this year’s“Chinese Bridge” Chinese Proficiency Competitionin the France regional final for college students acrossthe world.
Since my childhood, just as some people have afeeling for the cultures of India, Russia, Japan, or Senegal,I have always been able to draw an inexplicableenergy from Chinese culture. The history, traditionaldress and hairstyles, and arts of China have alwayscaptivated me deeply; this is probably the drivingforce behind my pursuit of learning Chinese. I loveChinese history and folklore, and I am fascinated bythe way in which Chinese people are able to encapsulatea vivid narrative with idioms or a few words.
I recall that, at the age of 15, I watched a filmwith dual Chinese and English subtitles. I was struckby the beauty of Chinese characters; for example, thecharacter 點(diǎn) meaning “dot” resembles a showerhead. This revelation sparked a strong desire in me tolearn Chinese, an interest that I have steadfastlypursued for seven years. My ambition is to become amultilingual translator (F-E-C) in the entertainmentindustry.
Embarking on a journey to learn Chinese hasbeen one of the best decisions of my life. It hasenabled me to understand a country that was entirelyunknown to me during my childhood, meet manyextraordinary individuals, and secure a promisingcareer. During my studies at the University of LaRochelle, I interned at the Confucius Institute, which was an experience greatly benefiting me.During those three months, I created variousvideos for international Chinese language coursesand engaged in translation work. The instructorsat the Confucius Institute were both diligent andpatient; they conversed with me daily in Chinese, which rapidly improved my spoken language. Myparticipation in the “Chinese Bridge” competitionhas been immensely rewarding. Through preparation,I have expanded my knowledge of Chineseculture, including learning Chinese dances andwearing traditional costumes. After rounds ofcompetition, I have gradually overcome my fear ofspeaking and performing in public. In the past, I feltpressure when speaking Chinese but now, havingmade friends who are also learning Chinese, I havelearned to be tolerant of myself and have started tobuild self-confidence.
During my journey of learning Chinese, Ihave faced challenges such as mastering tones andidiomatic expressions. In order to overcome thesechallenges, I have practiced diligently; for idiomaticexpressions, I often seek the advice of my Chinesefriends. For those learning Chinese, I recommendthe use of electronic dictionaries and watchingtelevision dramas. My teachers of Chinese encourageme to read and write essays; by studying texts at HSKlevels five and six, I have enhanced my languageproficiency. In terms of spoken communication,I enjoy engaging in discussions with friends on avariety of topics.
Although I have won the “Chinese Bridge”France regional final, I consider myself to be justan ordinary student of Chinese. My personal goalsremain consistent, i.e. to work as a translator ofsubtitles for Chinese television dramas and/or videogames, to travel to China, and to visit all of the country’sprovinces in order to deepen my understandingof the culture. The “Chinese Bridge” competition isjust one achievement for me, representing a startingpoint for building confidence, meaning that I stillhave a long way to go in my journey of learningChinese. In this country, brimming with wisdom andmystery and home to over a billion people, there is somuch more for me to learn and experience.
