What I find fascinating is that people with confidence always seem to 23 on top. They seem to 24 the obstacles that stand in their way. Its as if problems and challenges run from the person who has confidence.

How does food affect mood and mind? The answer may lie in the chemistry of the brain and nervous system. Molecules called neurotransmitters (神經(jīng)傳遞素) are chemical messengers. They carry a nerve impulse across the gap between nerve cells. The release of neurotransmitter molecules from one neuron and their attachment to receptor sites on another keep a nerve impulse moving.

Nerve impulses carry messages from the environment to the brain, for example, the pain you feel when you stub (踢碰) your toe. They also carry messages in the other direction, from the brain to the muscles. Thats why you back away from the obstacle that initiated the pain signal and exclaim, “Ouch!”

“Many neurotransmitters are built from the foods we eat,” says neuroscientist Eric Chudler of the University of Washington. Too little or too much of a particular nutrient in the diet can affect their production, Chudler says. For example, tryptophan from foods such as yogurt, milk, bananas, and eggs is required for the production of the neurotransmitter serotonin. Phenylalanine from beets, almonds, eggs, meat, and grains goes into making the neurotransmitter dopamine.

Dozens of neurotransmitters are known; hundreds my exist. Their effects depend on their amounts and where they work in the brain. The neurotransmitter serotonin, for example, is thought to produce feelings of calmness, relaxation, and contentment. Drugs that prevent it from being taken again (into the neuron that released it) are prescribed to treat depression. In at least some healthy, nondepressed people, carbohydrate foods seem to enhance serotonin production and produce similar effects. “It is the balance between different neurotransmitters that helps regulate mood,” Chudler says.

Proper nutrition may also enhance brainpower. Choline is a substance similar to the B vitamins. Its found in egg yolks, whole wheat, peanuts, milk, green peas, liver, beans, seafood, and soybeans. The brain uses it to make the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. To test the effects of choline on memory and learning, researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology gave memory tests to college students before increasing the amount of choline in their subjects diets. Later, they retested. On the average, memories were better, and the students learned a list of unrelated words more easily.

39. The function of neurotransmitters can be best compared to that of .

A. a transport vehicleB. a protective shield

C. a power plantD. a food factory

40. Researchers at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology intended to find out .

A. how choline is produced out of foods

B. how choline is converted into acetylcholine

C. if the improvement of brainpower is related to choline

D. if the improvement of brainpower is related to proper diets

41. What is the message the author intends to convey?

A. The chemistry of the brain and nervous system.

B. The influence of foods on our food and mind.

C. The functions of neurotransmitters.

D. The importance of a balanced diet.

Cars and other road vehicles are the single main source of harmful nitrogen oxides.

Road transport remains the biggest source of harmful air pollution in the EU despite efforts to reduce emissions over the past decades.

A report published by the European Environment Agency (EE.) shows that it is the single main source of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide and nonmethane volatile organic compounds.

It is also the second most important source of PM10 and PM2.5 particles.

As well as road transport, manufacturing industries, construction, the residential sector and agriculture are the main sources of air pollution in Europe today, the agency said.

The EEA said, “Particulate matter from sources such as vehicle exhausts and residential heating can affect the lungs and harm people of all ages, but it is known to pose an extra risk to those with existing heart and respiratory problems.”

“Air pollutants are also responsible for the acidification of forests and water ecosystems, and eutrophication of soils and waters—leading to a limited supply of oxygen in rivers and lakes.”

A spokesperson for campaign group T&E (the European Federation for Transport and Environment) told EDIE:“One of the key reasons that transport is still such a major cause of air pollution in Europe is because transport users rarely have to pay for the pollution they cause.”

“Currently Member States are forbidden from including pollution charges in road tolls.”

“The commission just last month proposed to change the rules, a move that we urge the Parliament and Ministers to support.”

“There are also some positive signs of change as London and a number of German cities have introduced low emission zones over the last year. But there is still a long way to go.”

According to the report, nitrogen oxide emissions decreased by 35% between 1990 and 2006, although the rate of decrease was just 1.8% in the final year of that period.

Electricity and heat production remains the main source of sulphur oxides emissions, followed by manufacturing industries and construction sources.

In contrast, agricultural activities were responsible for the vast majority of ammonia emissions—livestock manure and fertilizers accounted for more than 90% of the emission.

42. In order to control air pollution in the past years, the EU has tried to .

A. impose strict laws on pollution control

B. cut down on the number of vehicles

C. restrict the sources of nitrogen oxides

D. trim the discharge of car exhausts

43. According to the EEA, what is the second most important source of PM10 and PM2.5 particles?

A. Air pollution.

B. Nitrogen oxide.

C. Road transport.

D. Organic compounds.

44. The campaign group T&E advocates that air pollution should be reduced by .

A. raising peoples awareness

B. imposing an economic stimulus

C. increasing government fundings

D. calling for international cooperation

45. The report published by the EEA is aimed at revealing .

A. the types of air pollutants

B. the effects of road transport

C. the measures against air pollution

D. the prospect of environment protection

Tencent, the gaming and socialmedia firm, started its business by way of QQ, its instantmessaging service. Unlike global Internet giants such as Google and Twitter, Tencent still makes its money in its protected home market.

Yet the Chinese firms stock market valuation briefly crossed the $100 billion mark this week for the first time. Given that the valuation of Facebook, itself reached that point only a few weeks ago. However, Tencent now has bigger revenues and profits than Facebook. In the first half of this year Tencent enjoyed revenues of $45 billion and gross profits of $25 billion, whereas Facebook saw revenues of $33 billion and gross profits of $935 million.Tecents market value reflects the remarkable rise in its share price. A study from the Boston Consulting Group found that Tencent had the highest shareholder total return of any large firm globally from 2008 to 2012—topping Amazon and even Apple.

Tencent has created a better business model than its Western peers. Many Internet firms build a customer base by giving things away. They then seek to monetize their users, usually turning to online advertising. Other firms try to make ecommerce work. But as the case of revenuerich but profitpoor Amazon suggests, this can also be a difficult road.

Tencent does give its services away: QQ is used by 800m people, and its WeChat socialnetworking app (which initially resembled Americas Whats App) has several hundred million users. What makes it different from Western rivals is the way it uses these to promote online games and other revenueraising offerings. Once users are hooked on a popular game, Tencent then persuades them to pay for “valueadded services” such as fancy weapons, snazzy costumes used in games, while its peers are still making most of their money from advertising.

This year China become the worlds biggest ecommerce market. It is also now the biggest market for smart phones. This means it may soon have the worlds dominant market in “mcommerce”, purchases on mobile devices.

Tencents main rivals in Chinese mcommerce are Baidu, and Alibaba. All three have been wild about acquiring other companies so as to lead the market. The big worry for investors is the cost of this arms race.

Alibaba recently invested $300m in AutoNavi, an onlinemapping firm, and nearly $600m in Sina Weibo. Baidu has spent $1.85 billion buying 91 Wireless, the countrys biggest thirdparty store for smartphone apps, and $370m for PPS, an onlinevideo firm.

Tencent may have an edge over its two rivals in mcommerce because of the wild popularity of WeChat. But to ensure it stays in the race, it is also spending heavily. It invested $448m in Sogou, an onlinesearch firm and had previously invested in Didi Dache, Chinas largest taxihailing app, and is rumoured to be interested in online travel and dating firms too.

A more pressing worry for Tencents shareholders is that its crazy spending, on top of heavy investment in improving its unimpressive ecommerce offerings, will eat into profits. Worse, the mcommerce arms race risks distracting it from gaming and valueadded services.

46. What can we know about Tencents stock market performance from 2008 to 2012?

A. Its market value was second only to Amazon.

B. Its high stock market valuation resulted from its big revenue.

C. Its shareholders got the highest return because of its high share price.

D. It absorbed more investment from shareholders than its Western peers.

47. From the first two paragraphs, we can learn that .

A. Facebook had higher operating costs than Tencent in the first half of 2013

B. Twitter makes more money in its home market than in its overseas market

C. Tencent focuses its efforts on investment in the stock market

D. Facebooks valuation reached $100 billion later than Tencent

48. If an Internet firm wants to follow the example of Tencent it can try to .

A. give as many gifts away to its customers as possible

B. strengthen its online advertising business

C. aim to achieve rapid growth in the ecommerce market

D. pay more attention to its valueadded services

49. According to Paragraphs 6 and 7 the competition between Tencent and its Chinese competitors suggests that .

A. the money Alibaba spent is twice as much as that of Tencent

B. Baidu invested more heavily than other Internet firms

C. the strength of Tencent will lie in operating ecommerce

D. Alibaba has more chances in the mcommerce industry

50. The passage is mainly developed by .

A. making comparisons

B. following the order of time

C. analyzing effects

D. following the order of importance

To Move Ahead You Have to Know What to Leave Behind

Decisions are the most fundamental building blocks of successful change in our organizations, our teams, and our careers. The faster and more strategically we stack those blocks, the faster and more successfully we achieve change. Yet, change efforts often stall precisely because those decisions dont happen.

The question is why?

Avoid Changing By Addition.

Technically, deciding to do something new without killing something old is not a decision at all. It is merely an addition.

When an executive announces that her business will change to become a luxury service provider, technically it is not a decision until she also states that they will not provide low cost services to pricesensitive customers anymore.

When a sales manager declares that his strategy this quarter will require his salespeople to spend more time strengthening existing customer relationships, he has only made an addition until he also declares that they should spend little time on something else like hunting for new customers.

Your palms might be sweating at the mere thought of telling your team to ignore some group of paying customers or to not spend time hunting for new business, even if you really want to see the change happen. But this changebyaddition approach can be a death blow.

Avoid TrickleDown Tradeoffs (權(quán)衡).

When team leaders fail to decide which old directions are going to be sacrificed in service of the new direction, the tradeoff doesnt magically disappear.

Constant tradeoffs create two major problems for change efforts. First, it is highly unlikely that each team member will independently arrive at the same conclusion about what to do and what not to do. Part of the team will choose to move in one direction while the other part moves in another direction.

Second, psychologists have shown that making tradeoffs depletes our overall mental capacity and causes us to make poorer judgments in completely unrelated situations. when your team has to spend a long morning making tradeoffs it leads to long afternoons of either staring at the wall and websurfing, or making poor choices for their customers, their workloads, and their budgets.

To Lead Is To Decide.

Making change decisions is a cognitively and emotionally taxing activity that the average person will go to great lengths to avoid. That might be a key element of what makes great leaders great. Great leaders and change agents have come in all shapes, sizes, colors, genders, and personality types. But the one thing they all seem to have in common is their willingness to decide when others could not.

五、One possible version:

From the bar chart given above, we can find that it reflects the statistics of profession tendency between girls and boys. Most obviously, 40% of boys intend to be a manager, with only 15% of girls choosing this job. When it comes to the profession of teacher, 45% of girls prefer to take this job, while the proportion of boys only account for 5%, 40% lower than that of girls.

The bar chart informs us of the phenomenon that there exist some differences in profession choices between boys and girls. The reasons can be listed as follows: for one thing, quite a few boys regard being a manager as a symbol of success. As this profession stands for promising futures, fat pay and competence. When it comes to girls, they are more willing to be a teacher. As this profession features stability and respect.

Both girls and boys have rights to choose their profession. However, one thing we should bear in mind is that there exist no better or worse, superior or inferior jobs, but suitable and satisfactory ones.
