Once again this year, like last, I have the honor of recommending a selection of books for the TED Bookstore. Below are this years picks, along with the original text that appears on the bookstore cards and the introduction.
1. TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS
When a journalist by the name of “Dear Sugar” introduced herself on The Rumpus on March 11, 2010, she made her suggestions clear: a “bythebook common sense of Dear Abby and the low quality of Cary Tennis and the rudeness of Dan Savage and...” But in the twosome years that followed, she went on to deliver something brief, more honest, more profound(深刻的). Collected in Tiny Beautiful Things: Advice on Love and Life from Dear Sugar, one of the best psychology and philosophy books of 2012, is her wholehearted wisdom on lifes trickiest contexts—sometimes the simplest, sometimes the most complex, always the most deeply human.
2. BIG QUESTIONS FROM LITTLE PEOPLE
The questions children ask are often so simple, so basic, that they turn unclear yet profound philosophy into requiring applepiefromscratch type of answers. To explore this simplicity and expansiveness, Elwin Harris asked thousands of primary school children between the ages of four and twelve to send in their most restless questions, then invited some of todays most wellknown scientists, philosophers, and writers—including TEDsters like Alain de Botton, Mary Roach, and Richard Dawkins—to answer them. The result is Big Questions from Little People & Simple Answers from Great Minds, among both the best childrens books of 2012 and the years overall reader favorites. Part of the money from the book benefits Save the Children.
3. WHERE THE HEART BEATS
In Where the Heart Beats, which was also one of the best philosophy books of 2012, longtime art critic and practicing Buddhist Kay Larson constructs an intellectual, creative, and spiritual biography of John Cage—one of the most influential composers in modern history, yet also one of historys most misunderstood artists, whose impact reaches beyond the field of music and into art, literature, cinema. Fifteen years in the making, this superbly researched, beautifully written masterpiece weaves together a great many threads of cultural history into a whole understanding of both Cage as an artist and Zen as a lens on existence.
4. ADVICE TO LITTLE GIRLS
In 1865, Mark Twain did something unexpected—he penned a childrens story, in which he challenged kids to digest the intelligent humor that was, and still is, known for among his adult audiences. Nearly a century and a half later, beloved Russian childrens artist Vladimir Radunsky and Brooklyn independent publisher Enchanted Lion are bringing Advice to Little Girls to life, imagined in the style of the scrapbooks and small albums that children of Twains time used for doodling(亂涂亂畫(huà)) and collecting various curious things.
36. Which of the following statements is NOT true?
A. Both WHERE THE HEART BEATS and TINY BEAUTIFUL THINGS deal about Philosophy.
B. ADVICE TO LITTLE GIRLS is used by children for doodling(亂涂亂畫(huà)) and collecting various curious things.
C. Reading the book of BIG QUESTIONS FROM LITTLE PEOPLE will benefit parents.
D. Mark Twain was once worried that it was difficult for young children to understand the humor in ADVICE TO LITTLE GIRLS.
37. The passage is mainly intended as .
A. an advertisement of the books
B. an introduction of some wellknown writers
C. a recommendation of bookstores
D. a brief introduction of some bestsellers

Pop stars today enjoy what once only belonged to the royalty (皇室). Wherever they go, people turn out in their thousands to greet them. The crowds go wild trying to catch a brief glimpse of their smiling, colorfully dressed idols. The stars are transported in their chauffeur driven Rolls Royces, private helicopters or executive aeroplanes. They are surrounded by a permanent entourage (隨從) of managers, press agents and bodyguards. Photographs of them appear regularly in the press and all their comings and goings are reported, for, like royalty, pop stars are news. If they enjoy many of the privileges of royalty, they certainly share many of the inconveniences as well. It is dangerous for them to make unscheduled appearances in public. They must be constantly shielded from the adoring crowds who idolize them. They are no longer private individuals, but public property. The financial rewards they receive for this sacrifice cannot be calculated, for their rates of pay are great.
And why not? Society has always rewarded its top entertainers lavishly. The great days of Hollywood have become legendary: famous stars enjoyed fame, wealth and adulation (奉承) on an all time scale. By todays standards, the excesses of Hollywood do not seem quite so spectacular. A single gramophone record nowadays may earn much more in royalties than the films of the past ever did. The competition for the title “Top of the Pops” is fierce, but the rewards are truly huge.
It is only right that the stars should be paid in this way. Dont the top men in industry earn enormous salaries for the service they perform to their companies and their countries? Pop stars earn vast sums in foreign currency—often more than large industrial companies—and the taxman can only be grateful for their massive annual contributions to the exchequer (國(guó)庫(kù)). So who would begrudge them their rewards?
Its all very well for people in boring jobs to complain about the successes and rewards of others. People who make envious remarks should remember that the most famous stars represent only the tip of the iceberg. For every famous star, there are hundreds of others struggling to earn a living. A man working in a steady job and looking forward to a pension at the end of it has no right to expect very high rewards. He has chosen security and peace of mind, so there will always be a limit to what he can earn. But a man who attempts to become a star is taking enormous risks. He knows at the outset that only a handful of competitors ever get to the very top. He knows that years of concentrated effort may be rewarded with complete failure. But he knows, too, that the rewards for success are very high indeed: they are the payback for the huge risks involved and once he makes it, he will certainly earn them. That s the essence of private enterprise.

The question of whether our government should promote science and technology or the liberal arts in higher education isnt an either / or proposition (命題), although the current emphasis on preparing young Americans for STEM(science, technology, engineering, maths)—related fields can make it seem that way.
The latest congressional report acknowledges the critical importance of technical training, but also asserts that the study of the humanities (人文學(xué)科) and social sciences must remain central components of Americas educational system at all levels. Both are critical to producing citizens who can participate effectively in our democratic society, become innovative (創(chuàng)新的) leaders, and benefit from the spiritual enrichment that the reflection on the great ideas of mankind over time provides.
Parents and students who have invested heavily in higher education worry about graduates job prospects as technological advances and changes in domestic and global markets transform professions in ways that reduce wages and cut jobs. Under these circumstances, its natural to look for what may appear to be the most “practical” way out of the problem “Major in a subject designed to get you a job” seems the obvious answer to some, though this ignores the fact that many disciplines in the humanities characterized as “soft” often, in fact, lead to employment and success in the long run. Indeed, according to surveys, employers have expressed a preference for students who have received a broadlybased education that has taught them to write well, think critically, research creatively, and communicate easily.
Moreover, students should be prepared not just for their first job, but for their 4th and 5th jobs, as theres little reason to doubt that people entering the workforce today will be called upon to play many different roles over the course of their careers. The ones who will do the best in this new environment will be those whose educations have prepared them to be flexible. The ability to draw upon every available tool and insight—picked up from science, arts, and technology—to solve the problems of the future, and take advantage of the opportunities that present themselves, will be helpful to them and the United States.
41. What does the latest congressional report suggest?
A. STEMrelated subjects help students find jobs in the information society.
B. The humanities and STEM subjects should be given equal importance.
C. The liberal arts in higher education help enrich students spiritual life.
D. Higher education should be adjusted to the practical needs of society.
42. What is the main concern of students when they choose a major?
A. Their interest in relevant subjects.
B. The academic value of the courses.
C. The quality of education to receive.
D. Their chances of getting a good job.
43. What does the author say about the so called soft subjects?
A. The benefit students in their future life.
B. They broaden students range of interests.
C. They improve students communication skills.
D. They are essential to students healthy growth.
44. What kind of job applicants do employers look for?
A. Those who have a strong sense of responsibility.
B. Those who are good at solving practical problems.
C. Those who have received a wellrounded education.
D. Those who are likely to become innovative leaders.

The first halftime of the football match was full of excitement. The two teams, Vernon Park looked worried and Steelhouse were talking excitedly. It was 11,but Steelhouse were on their way. They had Del, who got a goal.
The second half started with Del playing back in defence. Del drifted back, back and back. This meant that Del was there to stop Vernon Park scoring. But Steelhouse didnt score either.
Now, there was ten minutes left of the game. Something had to happen. Then a Vernon defender kicked a high ball downfield. The ball skidded off a Steelhouse knee.
Corner!
“Back, lads!” yelled Harry. “Five minutes left! Get ready for the corner.”
Del got into position and glanced up again, No Dad!
The kick was taken just as Dels Dad walked to the edge of the field. The ball came hard and low across the goal mouth.
It hit the side of someones heel and jumped up to Dels hand.
PENALTY?。。。?! The ref was pointing at the penalty spot and the whole field were shouting.
“YOU DUCK EGG, DEL!” Cropper was face to face with him. He looked ready to hit him.
“It hit me—right? Im not superman!” said Del as he walked away with his back to everyone.
“Give me strength?。 ?roared Harry.
In went the penalty. 21 to Vernon Park.
“Five more minutes”, thought Del, as he got back to the center, “Then its over, no more football for me.” Just then his Dad came over and patted Del on the shoulder. “ Dont worry, son. Never mind... It wasnt your fault. Show them what you can do!”
As Del walked back to the middle, the eyes of all his teammates arrowed into him. He could almost felt their angry thoughts. This was why he wasnt going to play again. Ever.
Then as he came up to the center circle, Spanner ran over to him. Poor Spanner! Thered no winners medal for him today after all. But he wasnt angry with Del. “It wasnt your fault, Del!” he said loyally. “Youll show them, wont you? Look, their keeper is off his line again!” Del took a look. Spanner was right. The Vernon keeper had run out cheering when they scored the penalty. He was still way out, joking with the defender—the idiot!
Now, with three minutes remaining, there was no time for skills or tricks like before.
The laughter of the crowd got around in Dels head. Suddenly, he was angry. Yes, hed show them.
“Touch it to me, Span!” he said. Spanner kicked off. Del took the ball and he was away. Five steps inside the Vernon half, he smashed the ball over the keepers head... and into the back of the net! 22!
The teams kicked off again. And before the Vernon team had finished arguing, Spanner sent Del his first straight pass of the evening. With the ball under perfect control, Del turned left and then right, past four defenders. Then he fooled the goalkeeper into diving the wrong way and ran neatly past him. Del could easily have put the ball into the open net. But he didnt, he stopped. The defenders of the other team, Vernon Park, all ran at Del, desperately. Spanner was charging up alone on the other side like a mad horse. Del carefully sidefooted the ball right across the face of the goal. Spanner couldnt miss from less than a meter out.
The stadium exploded with yells of disbelief. Spanner was surrounded and followed by the excited Steelhouse team as he ran around the pitch waving his arms and shouting.
The last minute crawled round as Del took the ball and kept it under his control until the whistle went. 32 to Steelhouse.
The whole Steelhouse team went mad, cheering and shouting. Del stood in the center circle, his heart thundering with excitement. This is special, he thought.

How to Release Creativity
According to most dictionaries, creativity is the ability to create. However, creativity is more than what is defined by the dictionary. It is an idea, a process, a thought, or a state of mind. One cannot learn to be creative because creativity is natural and unique to each individual. People should know that creativity doesnt equal success. It equals the act of expressing. So, if at first the goal that is aimed for is not achieved, there is no need for worry or frustration.
Creativity can, however, be released by discovery. Some people need encouragement to help release their creativity. There are quite a few ways to release it.
One way to release creativity would be to look for what can inspire you. Looking at the world and admiring the differences in people and places help. Creativity can be drawn from their beauty. A person can touch, taste, smell, hear, and see hundreds of different objects. Aromas from foods, textures of blankets, and sight of unusual objects can all give inspiration.
Many people are too concerned with how things should look. The focus should be on how it actually looks in the raw, to the human eye. Colors and shapes can be distorted (扭曲) by the mere fact that people want others to see it for what it is. Its more difficult for someone to let go of all that and just let their creativity flow, unblocked.
Another way to get creativity flowing is to research what other artists have done or are currently doing. Their cultures and biographies alone can be an inspiration. Examining their works can help some appreciate artistic expression. New techniques can even be drawn from their works.
Some people are even inspired by everyday events, like reading the newspaper or watching the news. Some can take other peoples situations and describe how it makes them feel. That is a way to release creativity. Controversial issues, such as war or abortion, can inspire writings like poems. They can be used to express death, loss, or tragedy. General topics such as religion or politics can branch off into many directions, sending creativity into overdrive.
Creativity is not about reaching a goal or being a perfectionist. Its about being, feeling, and taking all that is inside and letting it out in one way or another. Creativity is not always expressed by paintings, drawings, or writings. Ones action is the main form to express creativity. Romance, for example, is a form of creativity. Love and emotion are inspired by one person for another. Taking something inside and then putting it back out into the world as another thing is the key of creativity. Knowing and loving someone so much that there is a need to express it is a very natural form of creativity.
Another form of expressing creativity is talking. Some people are more blessed in this area than in more obvious ones, such as painting or drawing. They paint a “word picture”. Speeches can be centered around new ideas and thoughts. It can contain all of ones being and transform it into either simple or complicated words.
Inspiration is vital to creativity. Even if its only a slight feeling or thought that inspires. Creativity can be released each time attempts are made to use the body as an outlet. Remember that creativity is not an art form, but that it forms art.

五、One possible version:
Nowadays the phenomena of excessive packaging of goods are common in our society: clothes are wrapped in welldesigned plastic bags; imported bottles of grape wine are packed in wooden boxes, which should set us thinking.
There are several causes of excessive packaging. On one hand, a large number of companies believe that they can attract customers attention and stimulate their purchasing desire by overpackaging their goods, thus gaining more profits. On the other hand, many consumers mistakenly hold that the more delicate the package is, the better the quality will be.
In my view, excessive packaging has disastrous consequences, including the loss of precious resources and excessive consumption of water and energy. Something must be done to solve the problem. First, laws and regulations must be made to restrict excessive packaging of companies. In addition, we need to raise consumers awareness that excessive packaging doesnt mean high quality and advocate packaging recycling.
