Government Reshuffle Plan
The Ministry of Railways will be split with its regulatory powers going to the Ministry of Transport while its commercial operations will be run by a company. Since the beginning of 1980s, there have been seven major rounds of government restructuring and staff reductions. As a result, the number of ministries and departments of the central government reduced from 100 about thirty years ago to the current 25. As for the government reform, a common consensus has been reached that the new government should be an efficient one.
Battle for Dominating in Broadband
On March 8, Ma Huateng, Tencent's CEO, suggested the government should shoulder the responsibility of building the networking infrastructure especially the broadband networking, or set up a technical strategic investment company in which private companies could participate. However, as for three large telecom operators in China, it's more important to quicken the implementation process of the "Broadband China" strategy.
GM Buys Back 1% Stake in Joint Venture
General Motors Co claimed that it had repurchased a 1 percent stake in its joint venture with Chinese partner SAIC Motor Corp Ltd. The move will increase GM's ownership of Shanghai General Motors Co Ltd back to 50 percent. GM paid USD 119 million for the 1 percent stake, which it sold to SAIC for USD 85 million in February 2010. But GM still retained a 49 percent share in SGM, a sales business unit set up in November 2011 to sell imported cars and cars made by SGM.
“China Dream” and the Middle Class
Economy & Nation Weekly interviewed with Cheng Li, director of research at the John L. Thornton China Center in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, to talk about his opinions on the "China Dream". He believes that China will step into the middle class society in the next 15 years to 20 years. Combined with this reality, "China Dream" should comply with values and pursuit aim of the vast middle class.
